Posted - 31 Mar 2009 : 14:30:13 So I am thinking of introducing a Shadowmaster to my campaign as a villain.
Being the perfect shape shifter I have a bunch of cool ideas as to what to do with him. The issue that I am having is more rules/DMing. When it comes to a point where my PCs go to fight the Shadowmaster maybe he does not want to reveal his true nature can he take the form of say a 20th level fighter?
I know that they have the Shadowmaster as an entry in a Monsters Manual and then revised it for 3.5. But it seems intentionally vague as is the Shapechange spell.
I assume they can take the shape of a creature but not their knowledge. So if it decides to take the shape of a 20th level fighter he can look like it and have the physical attacks like him but wouldn't have all of that fighters feats/skills. But if say they were to copy a monk or a rogue would they gain their extraordinary abilities?
Any help sages are willing to give is welcomed. |

Posted - 31 Mar 2009 : 16:02:38 Yeah, I'd not allow shapechanging to include classes.
But you could be evil, and say this malaugrym spent enough time posing as a fighter to pick up the class skills. It would up the CR, though. |

He would not gain Supernatural and Spell-like abilities of his new form, but would gain Extraordinary abilities.
I'm not sure what the abilities of the Shadowmaster are, but I don't think you can change into a class, but only into a new race/species. If that race has monk-like abilities, you'd be able to use them, but you wouldn't be able to change into a race with monk class levels. Again, I don't know if the Shadowmaster is special on this or not. The only classes I know of that allow 'swapping' of class abilities are the Factotum and Chameleon. |
