Posted - 14 Sep 2011 : 17:32:23 Greetings all,
I'm going old school with this, but has anyone ever tried coming up with who/what are the Bricksmen - who were mentioned in the Aurora's Catalogue? Obviously it appears to be a "secret" society, likely based on the Masons. But has anyone ever used it or come up with anything for it? Any lore? Any thing at all? Bueller?
I've taken a bash at trying to design a back story for them and am happy to share that if anyone's interested. But I'd like to know what experiences others have had as well. Thanks!

I admit that was what I thought when I read it the first time. Allowing for parody though, it was something I'd been mulling over and wondering whether anyone had ever used them or whether there was something else mentioned elsewhere. As you said, chances are this was just a throw-away piece in the material.
Nevertheless, I leave my offer of sharing a backstory open for anyone if they'd like to comment.
Thank you,

Posted - 20 Sep 2011 : 19:16:35 I suspect that the "Bricksman" are just an FR parody of the real world Masons. Supposidly, 4th degree Masons have secret knowledge that is not openly shared with anyone who is not also a 4th degree Mason. Hense, the comment on the Catlogue and the wearers of the trowel and mallet.
Frankly, since my Grandfather was a Mason, I was very disapointed that TSR chose to parody them in this fashion, but since the parody was both brief and non-offensive, I couldn't work up enough energy to protest. Just like the drow swimsuits, and the DeVinchi-style inventions, the brickman are something I just ignore from this otherwise excellent FR resource. |

Here's the description. Under Laborer's List, subsection Joiners/Stonemasons, which has the following just below it: DMs may allow PCs with the Carpentry and Stonemasonry proficiencies access to (or ownership of) any or all of the following; such PCs may have weapon proficiencies in items with weapon potential (DM’s option)
BRICKSMEN’S CATALOGUE: In addition to offering the crude tools of the trade, we provide numerous accoutrements to aid bricklayers in their other occupations. (Let those who understand be advised.) Our Bricksmen’s Catalogue may or may not be on hand at one of our stations, and is available to sharers of the trowel and mallet. (The brethren and sistern are known.) Requests to see the catalogue will only be honored in cases of extreme emergency. (Charlatans are warned.) stations with the Catalogue are defended by 15 bricksmen: Int 14; AL LN; AC 4; MV 12; HD 10; hp 80; THAC0 10; #AT 1; Dmg 1d6+1/1d6+1 mallets); SZ M; ML 20. |
