Posted - 04 Oct 2011 : 03:00:07 After a recent harpy encounter a few quick questions. If while making your way towards the Harp while Captivated and you walk underwater would not being able to hear the continued song break the captivation? how about a silence effect on the target? While making your way towards the Harpy do you take a double move, both as a move and as your standard action? and lastly, if the harpy leaves your line of sight and ducks down a hall or into a tower do you still follow them not really knowing their current location? does the captivating song impart some sort of instinctive knowledge of where to go to reach the harpy or should these effects negate the effect or allow second Saves? |

If I were the DM, I would have ruled being submerged would have negated the effects. Three reasons, from least important to most: line of sight is disturbed, hearing is greatly reduced and sound is distorted, AND natural self-preservation would over-ride a compulsion once the character needed to breath.
Plus, in most stories, being splashed in the face usually knocks someone out of a trance.
If water does not negate by splashing water in face, it should not matter when face gets wet other ways *G* I do agree that being under water distorts sound, I went for a new save if the song could still be heard. Line of sight does not matter, line of sound matters (sound does not travel a line, it is a circle.).
Area of range though could be effected. Sound made below water can travel well, sound made above water does penetrate water, however the distortion food take feet away from range. |

Posted - 04 Oct 2011 : 17:11:57 In the enounter we just ran the Harpy charmed 2 of the party memembers while the other 3 remained uncharmed. The hary was driven off (well fled for her life after a few lucky arrow shots) fleeing across water and into a tower. When the character tries to follow and walks underwater came the question wheither the captivation was negated. Would walking across (or under) water constitute a second save for deadly terrain or obviously harmful (as per the description) and if he fails will he walk to his death drowning? And the tower which is still within the 300' range of the captivating song, does he enter making his way to the top where the harp dweels or wander aimlessly around, searching? The rules of listen would indicate that ACUALLY hearing the song isnt as important as the Captivation itself as hearing a Harpy at 300' would impose a -30 to listen checks anyway (and who has that many ranks in listen?)but i just wanted feedback. So please, keep the ideas and opinions coming. |

Posted - 04 Oct 2011 : 08:08:13 Maybe under-water would be needed a saving throw in favour of the captive, as water distorsions the sound, though don't exactly know if the harpy's song effect is caused for certains notes, or just because is the harpy who sings... |

Posted - 04 Oct 2011 : 05:35:59 I would think that harpies are fairly aware of their own limitations. They would not impel an individual to take actions which could loosen their magical control, under ordinary circumstances, if their intent were to continue maintaining such control. |

Posted - 04 Oct 2011 : 04:14:46 Oh should add: Clearly if harpy moves too far away from target, the effect would be broken if target could no longer hear the song. Not that I would see any harpy starting a song to get a captive to follow and move that far away.
The target needs to hear the song. |

Sound does travel though water, so should be able to hear the song still. Might add a saving throw only because Harpy would not be under water as they are creatures of the air.
A spell of silence clearly would prevent hearing the song. That should release target.
I do not see anything that permits or forces a double move.
Line of sight does not matter, if song and captivation still compels. Target is drawn to the song heard.
Treat all replies as being my opinion and there might be a different rule or ruling by others.
