Hi,

spell states any ranged or thrown wep doubles the range for Duration.

is this also true for rays?
I am asking for rays usually follow rules - i.e. feats also are applicable for rays. - of ranged weapons

thank you for your replies.

i am basically looking for valid ways to increase the range of rays.

Why would it affect spell range? It assists in aiming.
Range categories, why not - though maybe only for devices (wands, etc).

Arcanamach shoots and scores.

Tome & Blood has a section on Weaponlike Spells. Page 37 says "Any spell that requires an attack roll and deals damage can be treated much as a weapon." Page 38 mentions Weapon Finesse: "You can designate touch spells as light weapons so as to add your Dexterity modifier to your melee attack rolls with such spells." Chapter 5, starting on page 79, adds that "Such spells can have critical hits, can be used in sneak attacks, and allow rangers to use their favored enemy bonuses."

So, at least in 3e, there was some basis for saying that spells which operate on a ranged-touch attack can be treated as weapons... at least in some ways. I still wouldn't read that to include that spells which increase the range of a thrown weapon also increase the range of a ray. I don't even like giving critical hits to a ray, unless we're also using called shots and letting players attack specific body locations... then a crit could make some sense.

I think the best way to extend the range on a ray spell in 3e/3.5e would be to research a higher level spell or use the heighten spell feat. Or have a prestige class that focuses on ray spells, and give them a class ability that enables longer-range rays... kinda like the master alchemist can make potions using higher-level spells.

I would rule that this spell does not effect Ray spells. I would also encourage my players, if they asked a question like you (Jakuta) did, to research a spell that effects the range of other spells.

Even without that spell description, I'd rule against it affecting rays. There isn't much, outside of metamagic, that will extend the range of a spell.

In one of the original crunch books (the paperback version of Complete Arcane I believe) it was stated that certain fighter feats can be applied to rays (weapon finesse and weapon specialization if memory serves and I think 1 or 2 others). Those may have been dropped with 3.5 rules though as I don't recall those rules being printed in the updated CA.

I think some Prestige Classes grant abilities to casters that double the range of their spells. Can't recall any off the top of my head though. Maybe the War Wizard PrC?

Other than the Enlarge Spell feat for 3e or the Far Reaching spells in 2e, I don't recall anything official that extends rays.

As a DM I wouldn't read "any ranged or thrown weapon" to include rays... but I would gladly add a feat or let a player research a spell or item to accomplish it. That's just me, though.
