Posted - 16 Jun 2005 : 16:43:08 You don't know me. I'm new to this forum but I have long experience with the Realms. I picked up the 1e boxed set when it came out in the 80s and ran Realms campaigns until shortly before 3e came out. I was also a long time member of the REALMS-L mailing list. As I said, I've got a lot of past experience with the past realms but almost none with the current 3e version.
Anyway, I'm going to be starting a campaign in a few weeks and need to set it somewhere. Unfortunately, because of moving (its a long boring story) all my 2e Realms stuff is in storage where I can't get to it (it's buried at the back of a 10x20 foot storage unit -- thanks movers...) without huge effort and will be for at least a few months. I've been looking over my 3e Realms products and noticing a few changes. Chief among them is the map. I knew that they compressed the map between editions, but it looks to me like they've done their level best to remove any remote, undetailed regions from the map. I'd hoped to find a nice, isolated corner of the map somewhere to plop my campaign down in for at least the first few levels without the hustle and bustle of everything intruding too much. This seems to be very hard now.
One of my old favorites was the region around Llorkh in the north. You had the Zhents in Llorkh but they were pretty isolated but now they've moved Evereska north to the point where it sits almost between Llorkh and the desert and given the Zhents a trade route directly across the desert (which they were always trying to establish but hadn't done so in 2e -- their caravans had to skirt the edge of the desert).
Another favorite spots was the area around what became Erlkazar in LoI, but that's been warped almost out of existance.
So I guess my first question for the list is where there are isolated, out of the way spots left in the Realms.

Posted - 02 Jul 2005 : 13:59:55 I would say Lorkh and environs is still plenty open, the trade route notwithstanding. It is shown as a mere track - plain enough to follow, but apt to be difficult in bad weather. And Lorkh is a far cry from anyplace else. And if you are used to running things there, you will have a flying start - NPC's already familiar to you that you can introduce your players to (if they have not met before) - and a good idea, in your own mind - of what the setting entails. |

I'd try Sembia. It's been left relatively untouched in gaming products. But, it's near enough other locations that you can create any plot thread for your campaign. |

Posted - 01 Jul 2005 : 22:18:50 Look in the top-right corner of the poster map. That there'd be The Endless Wastes, about 500X500 miles of ... grassland. In this area, you might find one town in every 40X50 mile area. Generally around 40-50 miles between towns. That's a good two day walk ... for humans in light armor. You get a dwarf fighter in medium armor, like meself, that's, oh, three and a half to four days between the towns. If that's not wide open enough for ye, then you're one picky fellow. |

Posted - 17 Jun 2005 : 18:37:51 The best places are those areas that never were detailed much in the old products. I can recommend:
-the Vast -Sembia -Thaar -Other Moonsea cities -The Ride -Eastern Amn -Impultar -Most of the eastern Inner Sea (from Vaasa to the Great Dale) -Anywhere in the south (including all those city-states on the trade routes. Ed did detail some of those in web suplements.) |

Posted - 17 Jun 2005 : 11:34:32 You can still use Erlkazar material in the current environment. Some portions of it survived, and the area is remote enough to be sparesly populated. The little area hemmed in by the Troll Mountains, the Giants Plain, the Giant's Run Mountains, Impresk Lake, the Snowflake Mountains and eastern Amn is out of the way, yet close enough to 'civilization' to move the campaign to after a few levels and the unpacking process of a 10x20 storage unit... |

Posted - 16 Jun 2005 : 16:54:32 If you want to remain in the heartlands, take a look at the south eastern portion of Sembia. There is lots of empty space, and if you are looking for a bit of framework, you could use the Fellaren-krae info posted in the Campaign Journals section of this website.
For something a little more free form you could move south of Westgate and there is lots of space undetailed there as well.
How about Mulhorand, Unther, the Shaar and great sea region?
