What happens to the worshipers of a deity who has died/vanished? Where do the souls of folks who worshipped Moander, Leira, Ibrandul, etc go? Do they just cease to exist, or are they shunted off somewhere else? Picked up by whatever diety picks up the new portfolio most relevant to the worhshipper? (If so, does Kelemvor have a host of souls who worhipped Myrkul before?)

For additional options regarding the still-living worshippers of a dead deity, check out the Ur-Priest prestige class in Complete Divine. Although the primary purpose for the prestige class seems to be catering towards evil characters, there is a paragraph on page 70 just before the entry requirements entitled 'Adaptation' for the worshippers of dead gods or those who've disappeared.
It opens up divine power for those who refuse to migrate to another deity. The class possesses a swift rate of granted spellcasting meant to replace the now virtually useless spellcasting ability of the ex-priest.
As a personal touch, one might replace the entry requirement of Spell Focus[Evil], with either Spell Focus[any alignment of the dead god] or some other appropriate feat if the deity was neutral.

I always figured the souls of past faithful would follow their diety, even if that diety faded, or perhaps they shift back and forth between their gods plane and the Prime Material plane (hence where a lot of ghosts and disturbed spirits come from).
Maybe dead Gods 'soul pools' become a part of the chaos that surrounds the planes...sorta like an afterimage of faith that lingers on well after the end of the religion or God. Then again, maybe these souls do become 'property' of the 'replacement' God.
It leads to the question; do souls have self determination? That is; do they choose who to follow or what to do? Or are they mearely like some sort of currency used by Gods that can be traded, lost or stolen by other gods?
This could be a really cool quest for high level adventurers...seeking out where souls go after gods have fallen... It makes me wonder about all the souls of the dead Egyptians and Mayans that must be kicking around somewhere, waiting for re-birth or redemption. |

I see the worshippers as worshippers of a set of concepts not followers of a certain divine person. The gods are a sort of representatives of different ways of worshipping a wide variety of the phenomenons of life. When a god dies and his responsibilities are given to another deity, his believers, if they stay faithful to the faith, will also switch deity. The god dies, but the preachings live on... |

I believe that the replacement Power takes over the dead worshippers of the Power that he/she/it replaced. If I remember correctly, in "Prince of Lies", there is a scene where Gwydion is assigned to look for Kelemvor's soul, along with a couple of denizens, one of which died as a "cyricist", and the other had died a worshipper of Myrkul before Myrkul bought the farm.
