Hello, I know I am not very frequent in this forum anyway. But I would appreciate greatly if fellow scribes, veterans and novices could contribute some creative ideas for a campaign that I and my friends are planning.
The ideas can be varying, outrageous or unconventional or conventional, all ideas appreciated.
Also, please forgive me if I could not provide any details and specifics about this campaign other than a brief outline at the moment. One thing sure, it is planned to be an intensive campaign.
We are planning to have the campaign to have a prelude or prologue to the main story, and it focuses on the far frozen north of Faerun- The depths of the endless Ice Sea whereby something evil and ancient powerful stirs deep inside the waters, and any ideas for a prologue that begins in or within the endless Ice Sea? Whereby, we need ideas on:
1)what kind of ancient evil and yet dynamically powerful creature that would wake up inside the depths of the Endless Ice Sea.
2)The History of this ancient evil like some foreigh planar creature (we are kinda shorta of ideas)
3) Which evil organizations' head figures are mad enough to accept the task of traveling to the Endless Ice Sea depths to awaken the creature after having a clue from an ancient scroll and how this evil head figure awaken the ancient evil.
4) On the FR map, near the Endless Ice Sea is WinterKeep, any history about this ruin? Can't find much history about it, and would the scribes here willingly inject some creative ideas to the background history of Winterkeep?
5)Also, what are the organizations in Faerun(be it good or evil) as well as NPCs(hopefully famous NPCs) that would be attracted to this rise of the ancient evil creature? The Fey'ri? The All time Zhents? The Chosen of Mystra?
6)We need this for an introductory and as well as interlude during the campaign. What are the worthy locations and landmarks and cities as well as important key figures :
1)in the Silver Marches,
2)Cormyr,
3)Heartlands
4)Thay
5)Aglarond
that are nice to hit out for this ancient evil to hit out and gain some influence.

Ulutiu, that's right... and the female giant god was Othea.
Lore pertaining to Ulutiu being cast into the Cold Sea can be found in Giantcraft and The Great Glacier.

Hmmm, In the giant's trilogy wasn't some sea god who was sleeping with the female giant god buried away in ice? Something like Ulutiu?
Or another take, weren't the Rus in the area (they formed Rashemen and were a very Viking like culture). Might there be an avatar of a powerful Norse "creature" frozen in said ice? Maybe its an avatar of the World Serpent (although some might say Dendar and the World Serpent are similar). As to who might be out to free him? Maybe some Yuan-Ti |

Belifet is the villain of the Icewind Dale computer game. This game takes place in 1281. As he is slowly working off his hundred years of banishment, soon he will be freed. |

What about a long sleeping Slaad Lord (probably a Death Slaad). In real life frogs and toads burrow into the mud at the bottom of ponds/rivers/lakes during the winter. Maybe this Slaad Lord had been teleported to an ice flow by a wizard and rather than freeze to death it jumped into the water and burrowed into the bottom to hibernate until some later time (you can probably come up with a better story than this). Alternatively, the Slaad had gone into hibernation as a gray slaad who had completed his transformation ritual but needed to hibernate to complete the process. After 10, 50, 100, or 1000 years it is ready to emerge as a Death Slaad. In fact, maybe it had undergone a particularly potent transformation in order to become an all-powerful Slaad Lord and a prophesy had been left detailing the time, manner, and location of his emergence. Agents of evil are preparing for this event as they seek to gain favor with this new power of evil in Faerun. |

Iyraclea the Ice Queen is probably a good villain, if we are talking about Epic-level "Frozen Lands" campaign

What about something new and of your own making? It doesnt even have to be anything remotely known. It can be something so ancient, it outdates entire civilizations. Use your imagination. Dont be afraid to experiment, both with yourself and your players. Your players are your best feedback, because it`s them that you ultimately are gonna have to persuade into believing this nonsense :) |

Um... do you have ANY source material? If not don't try for an answer because I (and probably everyone else) will tell you this: Buy the bloody books, it's all in there.
If you have the material the answer would be this: Read the bloody books, it's all in there.
If (like me) you're too poor and/or too removed from proper D&D suppliers to get the up-to-date gear, you can always head to http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads for .pdf versions of the 2e stuff. The North and Volo's Guide to Cormyr cover their respective areas quite well (the North including what is now the Silver Marches), though Volo favours adventurer's-eye-level 'feel' fluff rather than heavy weights of crunch-text.
That said, if you're really determined to get the up-to-date info, especially when some of it is rather more comprehensive than the oooooold 2e files, Mace's plan is probably best. Your players (and more importantly, the shared RP experience) will thank you for it. Hell, try asking for donations so you can get the books - they might surprise you and actually chip in.  |

Obvious answer would be a demon or devil in any way, shape or form. Although this tends to be very repetative. How about an ancient avatar of a long dead god? Maybe someone who, if unleashed and regains some power would endanger the balance?

Frozen by accident or design and he tries to take revenge on the followers of another power that unfortunately is also gone. The beings task now is not to take revenge but regain power...while others try to prevent it, or corrupt and use it for themselves.
