I have a question about a Favored Soul of Ilmater. The Favored Soul is automatically proficient with his deity's favored weapon and Ilmater's favored weapon is unarmed strike.

So, would it be reasonable to give a Favored Soul of Ilmater Improved Unarmed Strike so the character can do lethal damage and not provoke attacks of opportunity with an unarmed strike? Or should he simply get to punch someone without a -4 to attack rolls?

I know by the letter of the rules it is simply a Weapon Proficiency feat but I don't think it is that powerful to change it in the case of Ilmater. Favored Souls of deities that favor simple weapons in general tend to have less of a benefit but in the case of Ilmater it is even worse. One cannot be very effective using unarmed strikes unless they are a monk or have improved unarmed strike.

The reason that I'm curious about this is because I'm debating playing a Favored Soul/Sacred Fist of Ilmater and one of the prerequisites is Improved Unarmed Strike.

EDIT: Cleaned up annoying spacing issues

Corellon Larethian used to favor long bow and longsword, however in 3.X it appears he favors longsword.

As far as Eldath the net clearly can be a thrown weapon, though often used as a ranged weapon as well (depending on size of net).

ISTR some deities have or had a ranged and melee favored weapon. Not sure if this is still in place in third edition.

I guess there aren't a lot of deities that have multiple very different weapons, but there are some that have multiple (similar) weapons:

Lathander (Light or Heavy Macy)
Talos (longspear, shortspear, halfspear) - though I believe halfspear isn't in 3.5
Eldath (net or unarmed strike)

Ah, I wasn't referring to getting proficiency from other deities. What I was saying is that some deities have more than one weapon associated with them. If you are a favored soul, you pick the one with which you identify most. If that weapon is an unarmed strike, you get Improved Unarmed Strike. It it's a Whip, you gain Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Whip).

Which deities have multiple favored weapons? I can't think of any offhand; it certainly creates problems with at least weapon of the deity.

I don't recall it saying all Favored weapons, but rather, "deity's favored weapon." I would think this assumes the official favored weapon of the deity (in this caseIlmater.) I would grant the Improved Unarmed Strike feat (after all, if your deity's favored weapon is a greatsword, you are essentially getting a free Martial Weapon Profciency (greatsword) feat.)

You are correct, the Favored Soul gets weapon proficiency in his deity's favored weapon, not the favored weapon of other deities, but I'm talking about a Favored Soul of Ilmater here.

But thanks for the input. I think that it only makes sense to give the Favored Soul of Ilmater Improved Unarmed Strike. It's really not that powerful for a non-monk.

Improved Unarmed Strike is basically Weapon Proficiency(unarmed strike) anyway; I'd say go for it.
