Posted - 13 Jan 2007 : 21:00:05 Hi all,
I'm not sure if you have discussed this already, but I thought I'd bring your attention to the Ultimate Magus prestige class found in the recent 'Complete Arcane' book, pages 77 through 81.
It is of my opinion that this prestige class could be a very authentic medium to represent the Simbul in 3.5 game terms. The class augments both wizard and sorcerer spellcasting power simultaneously, at each level, and would give the Simbul the 'Omph!' she's desperately lacking with her current Epic Level Handbook incarnation.
Let me know what you think, or if you have better ideas in regards to the Simbul (I will soon have her make an appearance in my campaign -- yes, a full-blown battle appearance, and she needs to blast her foes down to at least 5 ppm or smaller... so go ahead and tell me how you'd make her as nasty as possible! 'a-la-Elminster-in-Hell' nasty!) |

Posted - 14 Jan 2007 : 10:40:48 Kaladorm: give me a couple more WotC book releases that offer that kind of irresistible PrCs, and I'll be able to answer a solid "no" to you...
Sanishiver: I will get around to do it at some point, as she will soon appear in my campaign... Stay tuned! within the month I say... |

Posted - 14 Jan 2007 : 05:02:31 Hey PDK I'm liking the Complet Mage book too.
I agree with your sentiments on the Ultimate Magus. I'd like to see a full build if someone has the time and nothing on their plate at the moment.

Posted - 14 Jan 2007 : 02:06:05 Just a friendly reminder all, that any 4th edition speculation or discussion should be confined to this thread:

Now lets move back onto a discussion of the Simbul and ways that Complete Mage can be used to represent her, and similar themes.
Thanks.

Posted - 14 Jan 2007 : 01:22:53 I'm starting to have concerns about the 'Complete Mage' PrCs though. You'd almost have to be a fool not to take 5 level dip in Abjurant Champion if you're a generalist wizard (who can say no to a swift +9 AC shield spell and a +9 AC mage armor?), and then when you're done doing that, the 'cost' to take Ultimate Magus is laughable (i.e. a one level slow down on your casting).
I play a bard in a local Planescape campaign (we play with the 3.5 rules but 'before' the Faction Wars), and I could not find an excuse to NOT take levels in Lyric Thaumaturge (the cost to that prestige class is that your bardic knowledge cease to improve; in exchange you get extra spell slots and extra spell known; your bardic music continue to improve normally)
I'm thinking we must the nearing the end of the third edition... around the end of the 2nd edition, game balance was thrown aside with the 'Combat Options' series, with things like Specialization, Mastery and Grand Mastery, and firearms that disregard armor bonus to AC, etc.
Hmm... |

Posted - 14 Jan 2007 : 00:43:13 makes me remember the scene about the Simbul in Baator meeting a Pit Fiend (from Elminster in Hell)
"What kind of womand do you bed? She didn't even slow down!?"

Posted - 13 Jan 2007 : 21:18:43 Yeah, we got to talking about this on the last page of this thread:
http://forum.candlekeep.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7848&whichpage=4
I figured on something like this for her shortform stats:
Sorcerer 10/Wizard 10/Ultimate Magus 10/Archmage 2
Which would give her CL of 20 as a sorcerer and a CL of 19 as a wizard, and if you make her sorcerer spells known all of those neat blasting spells she knows, she can just keep cranking out damage, while the wizard spells are her more tactical and thoughtful magic.
