I'm currently attempting to DM a campaign in which one of the PCs hails from Turmish and one from Thay, though actual play is confined to the Western Heartlands for the moment. Both players are having trouble coming up with their back-stories and I'm wondering where to send them, (or go myself), for more details, beyond "The Unapproachable East". Did Volo ever visit these areas in print? I'm sure that there are 2 E source books on the east; are they relevant, useful, and available?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Yep, Sage to the rescue once again, if only ambulance's were as fast as him ;D

That said. . . you'd have to give a bit more detail of the characters for me to come up with some back story idea's but here are a few for the Turmite (bwahaha, I know it's Turami but I just can't help myself *g*);

Mercenary! Turmish produces a LARGE number of mercenaries, always a good start for an adventurer.

Lost family! The folk of Turmish sometimes take to travelling later in life, setting up trade with far flung peoples or just enjoying themselves. Perhaps this young buck (or lass) has parents who went wandering and stopped sending letters home.

Big family! The parents had so many kids that the PC was left with nothing but working for an older sibling and scraping out a meager existance or hitting the road to find fortune.

With a Thavian it's pretty easy;
Repression! If I lived in Thay I'd sure want to beat feet. ;D

You'll also want Ed's POLYHEDRON articles for lore on Turmish that didn't make it into Vilhon Reach accessory. The coverage of Turmish in POLYHEDRON:- #96, 98, 101, 103–108.

See Mel Odom's The Jewel of Turmish novel also.

Sources for Thay include:- Spellbound, Unapproachable East, Dreams of the Red Wizards, Lords of Darkness, Champions of Ruin, and Races of Faerun.

Also, see the novel Red Magic for insights into Thay and the conduct of the Red Wizards. The Simbul's Gift and the more recent Crimson Gold novel. See the 1e and 2e FRCSs as well. And, the Heroes' and Villains' Lorebooks. I'd suggest Siverfall also, and Elminster's Daughter, as well as Whisper of the Waves and Lies of Light.

See also Jean Rabe's "Red Ambition" from the Realms of Magic anthology for more insights into the ways of the Red Wizards. I don't immediately recall whether that particular tale was included in the first Volume of the "Best of the Realms."

Thanks very much. "Vilhon Reach" looks excellent, and I didn't previously know they had "Lands of Intrigue" up for grabs.

Turmish is covered in the 2E supplement, "The Vilhon Reach." It is available for free download from the WotC.
