Posted - 05 Apr 2007 : 23:30:10 I have a question about Mallefluent the intelligent, chaotic evil vorpal axe that appeared in Castle Spulzeer & The forgotten terror. My players are going to be killed by the dagger Agarath & their souls will be transported in the gem (which is actually a ravenloft domain). There they will find Mallefluent and if things go well they will escape with the axe and come back in the realms.
Mallefluent really enjoys decapitating people and he is a a calculative but evil mastermind (ego 21). I'm looking for good ideas that I can eventually use in my campaign. What if one of the players is going to be "enthralled" by the axe? What kind of crimes will satisfy such an evil weapon and what can be his goal? And what if the other players learn the truth about their comrad and Mallefluent? How could they get rit of the weapon or destroy it?
thanks for your time :) |

Posted - 09 Apr 2007 : 13:34:20 thanks Mace,
The method to destroy the weapon isn't mentioned in the adventure book. My players will learn about the intelligent nature of the weapon but Maleffluent will try to look like a weapon with a good alignment. In fact I'm going to try to make so much mayhem as possible without the other party members will notice it. :) |

Posted - 08 Apr 2007 : 11:29:57 I don't recall the particulars about the weapon...though I think I remember that no definite way of destruction was mentioned...
As for the enthrall part... the general problem with this sort of thing is character and player knowledge. Do the players know about the axe's sentience? Do the players know that their buddy is now a puppet under control of the axe?
If they do not know about it, which I highly suggest... have a seperate session with the enthralled player...keep things in the dark for the rest of the group. This way it can be played out "realistically".
Over time, I'd suggest to the player to show different traits...not many, do not let him behave irrationally (at first)... let him become more ruthless etc. I'd give the player free reign over how he portrays the axe...with preordained "flashes" of the characters original personality piping in...
I hope that doesn't read as distorted as I see it in my head |
