Posted - 23 Jun 2006 : 22:19:37 I like to optimize a little but the thing I love about the mage class is that you really can work to become a character that you imagined when first putting the character to paper. Maybe you don't like using a certain school of spells? Or you could be a mage that won't cast a spell unless it is helpful to other people. There are plenty of role-playing and high level goals you can put together thus enjoying the gaming experience all the more. I always liked the idea of having a tower with all my adventuring loot piled in a corner. |

Posted - 23 Jun 2006 : 21:55:11 Build a character background first, including when, where, how and from who did the character learn magic from. Then cater your stats and mechanics to fit. |

Posted - 23 Jun 2006 : 19:21:37 I wasn't referring to individual scribes. :) I was referring to the group as a whole, in a sort of percentile sort of way. As in, the percent of people here who could help you build stats (and who are actually interested in doing so) is less than that on the optimization board. |

Hey, I resemble that remark
Seriously, I would not put everyone here in one category. Many scribes and sages here are very mechanics oriented.
I do agree however, to get information from several sources, it will help flesh out and allow you a better understanding of character creation as a whole. |

Posted - 23 Jun 2006 : 17:52:47 Well you can use a character generator, PCGen is one that comes to mind. There are also many NPC generators on the web.
Playing for 5 years you must have played with people that had arcane, divine and/or psionic characters.
Like any character you would want to place stats where they are most effective, concerntrant of class skills, etc. |

Posted - 23 Jun 2006 : 17:35:47 I'm not good on the mechanics end, but I will offer one bit of advice: come up with a good concept, first. Figure out what you want your mage or psion to be like, and then select feats and such to match the concept. |

Posted - 23 Jun 2006 : 17:29:13 It depends on the type of spellcaster you're playing, a wizard or a sorceror. I really can't give good advice on 'how to be a good mage' without knowing what sort of role you want to play (manipulator type, 'lorebook' type, heavy artillery, buff-bot, summoner, etc etc), in which cases some feats/prestige classes are better suited to different roles.
Remember that as a spontaneous caster (sorceror), metamagic feats are more flexibile and probably more useful, but do require a full round action to cast.
Are there any mages that you particularly admire in novels and want to emulate? Or particular styles that you've seen and wish to copy?. If not let us know more about your campaign, does it tend to be dungeon crawling, wilderness adventures, planes adventures, urban setting? combat oriented, roleplaying oriented, political intrigue motivated?

Posted - 23 Jun 2006 : 16:37:14 Take intelligence based skills (Spellcraft, Knowledge Arcana) and Concentration first. If you have extra skill points, take other Knowledge skills. Metamagic feats or metapsionic feats are a must (unless you want to be a creator type, in which case take item creation feats). Combat Casting if you're a wizard. Psions should have those bonus points/bonus powers feats. |
