Hi all I'm new to the forum. I can't wait to read some of the books, as a kid I have always been a fan of forgotten realms. Played through most all the PC games nwn bg iwd pst that were not extremely old school I'm aware that there were some PC FR games before.
Just curious if LFR is still going on I would love to go to the event and learn more and play!!! (I know I need some materials first though)  never been to a gen con I feel like I have been living under a rock.  |

Matt128, once you attend an event, the organizer should have everything you need. If you can't get ahold of a membership card, send me an address (privately) I can send it to. I have plenty lying around. |

thank you for the welcome. I guess I have to go to an actual event at a LFR store like wotc. But I have a wide variety of stores like that around here I'm going to check the out soon I just can't seem to find where I can join rpga online? I guess once I attend an event I get my dci number and join the rpga? thanks for all you information everyone its been a great help. |

Welcome to the 'Keep, the greatest (FR) site on the Interweb! 
Next up - don't know much about the LFR group, but I can say this - playing (and reading) in the Realms is a wonderful pastime, and no matter what you may hear or see (here and elsewhere), the edition you play doesn't matter at all, and neither does the system you use.
Also, don't take the term 'canon' too seriously - it's YOUR Realms, and you don't have to followe the official storylines at all if it works better for you to ignore them.
The key is to just have fun with it, weather you play or just read the novels.
And once again, welcome to Candlekeep, second home to the creator of the Realms, and many other notable Realms scribes. Well met.  |

Living Forgotten Realms (LFR) is the only sanctioned Forgotten Realms organized play campaign. It is run by the RPGA and maintained by the RPGA. It is still supported by WotC however the structure was recently changed and full control was given back to the RPGA (as has been in the case in past editions).
LFR uses the 4th Edition ruleset only. |

Matt128 was aking specifically about LFR and it uses 4e exclusively, as you've stated. And there's some speculation as to what WotC involvement is now for LFR. Since i'm not an RPGA member or utilize LFR material I didn't really understand the scope WotC had to begin with. As I now understand it, it's organized by the fan-base and adventures are not Canon. I just don't think WotC wants to take on the responsibility of doing all the LFR/RPGA stuff when it's just as easily manageable from the FLGS.
@ Matt128, there are also 3rd party sources (namely Paizo) that still produce supplements that utilize the d20/3e/3.5 system of D&D. If you go this route, I'd suggest sticking with Paizo/Pathfinder for the most part and picking/choosing specific supplements from 3.5 as you see fit. The conversion from 3.5 to Pathfinder is minimal and can be done with little effort. |

One of two current supported editions of D&D. ;)
4e and Pathfinder (aka 3.75, 3.P, etc). LFR is exclusively 4e, though LFR is no longer organized by WotC as I understand it. |

I'm pretty sure you can sign-up online and it's free. You can also go to a hosted event and sign up there (I believe). As for getting started, I'd suggest getting the Player's Handbook and a set of dice (as you noted) or you could buy the Core Set (PHB, MM, DMG) for a reduce in price (I think it's still cheaper to buy the bundle than each individual book) and you'll find better prices on Amazon.com.
You may be persuaded into buying the Essentials products which are designed to help new people get into D&D but it hasn't come out yet and I'm still wary of what it all entails. The essentials are compatable with 4E but you'll find some differences in some rules post-Essentials release. For example in the PHB Elves receive a +2 Dexterity, +2 Wisdom. With the essentials, they'll most likely have +2 Dex; +2 Wis or +2 Int. The good news is that all the revisions or "updates" WotC has made to 4E since it's start are free to download in .PDF form. |

So I guess I'm going to need Player’s Handbook, dice, and character sheet Ill have to buy the player's handbook and it should be in 4E not sure where to get a character sheet and I know if I get a D&D board game 4ED I can get the dice from that and I am guessing the character sheet. I downloaded a Character sheet off this site not sure if I can use it though half the page is in weird symbols. So in order to sign up the RPGA do I have to find an event first and get my RPGA number or do I do that some where online? |

Yea, 4E is 4th edition and it's the current supported version of D&D. Most LFGS only carry this edition but you can find previous edition info on Amazon.com and e-bay.
Now this is from my own view here but I've really enjoyed 4th edition since it's advent in 2008 but it brought sweeping changes to the Forgotten Realms. Namely a big reduction in the Pantheon, changes to elves, an event called the Spellplague which removed certain continents of Faerun (namely Unther, Maztica, Mulhorand, Lantan, Vilhon Reach, and Halruaa), placed a piece of another world called Abier over the contient of Maztica, advanced the time line of the Forgotten Realms to 1479 DR,....have I missed anything else guys?
But if your like me, I've taken what things I like about the changes and what things I liked previous to the chagnes and made them into my Realms. |

You mean Fourth edition? I'm kinda new at this and have not really played any D&D board games. I have read about them I used to play mage knight at this store called lone star comics with a friend. Our town used to have a WotC at the mall but they moved I am sure theirs one here in this metroplex. |

First, welcome to Candlekeep! I hope you enjoy the lively discussions (and par-take in them as well) around here and if you have any questions, the esteemed scribes here will mostly likely have an answer for you.
As to LFR, it's still going on very strongly. You'll have to sign up to RPGA and find a LFGS (local flag-ship gaming store is what it stands for I believe) that holds LFR events. You can do this by going to the WotC gaming site and use their site-locator. The LFR is probably going to be doing 4E games if thats cool with you. |
