Posted - 19 Apr 2011 : 00:44:55 It's also possible that he had a 19 dex at one point (deck of many things, etc.) that could have magically bolstered his dex. Then it dropped to 17 again as he aged.... |

Posted - 19 Apr 2011 : 00:00:02 I'll write off Mirt's declining agility to his advancing years. If he were younger and just as heavy he'd probably be rather spry. |

For agile fatmen I think of Sammo Hung and Bam Bam Bigelow. But as noted, the 17/18 applies more to older-Mirt's manual dexterity than his agility.

You don't remember the "Determining the fatness" thread?
-I do not. Link?
Tried looking for it, and all the sudden, I can't find it.

Mirt was a rotund man in his elder days. When he was young however, he definately could have had 18 dex. After all accounts he was a very active adventurer/brawler/womanizer etc. In his elder days however, i would assume he had somewhat less dex (if not aided by some magic trinket).
Essentially, this is how Ed also interprets Mirt, as he notes below, from February 2004:-
quote: ... the fat, wheezing, sly Mirt the Moneylender (take Shakespeare’s Falstaff, and add a dash of Poul Anderson’s Nicolas van Rijn and a handful of Glencannon), who’s crafty as they come but too old and slow for great heroics.

Posted - 18 Apr 2011 : 00:13:21 I tend to think Mirt would have an 18 Dex. That said, the "fat, wheezing, and old" description he usually gets would suggest a far less amazing strength and con.
I see Dex as fast-twitch muscle. Str as general overall muscle. Con as someone's endurance over time.
But that's just my view.

I'm here for DnD damninit man!
Seriously though, I'm 6' 285 lbs now; and I can still land a roundhouse kick on someone's cheek my height...I daresay Mirt has even better dexterity than I do! |

Posted - 17 Apr 2011 : 22:54:15 -Mark Buehrle is listed as 6'2", 235 lbs. He's a kinda chunky guy. And yet, chunky guys can do stuff like this: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100405&content_id=9091930&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb]. Being dexterous is not limited to being thin and lithe.

Of course, let's not forget, D&D/Forgotten Realms is not reality, so it's hard to really be realistic.
And trust me, Jelennet, there was a thread like this years ago on the Wizards of the Coast Forgotten Realms boards, and it just about turned into a complete (flame) war, especially with one female user complaining about how she's struggled with her weight and going back & forth until she finally (and wisely) decided to back out of the whole argument. She was RATHER annoying for the most part either way, namely with most of what she said being rude to people.

Indeed. I once saw a guy who was over 400 pounds prove to be quite the dancer. He had, once upon a time, been quite athletic, and he still had good moves and good muscles -- the latter were just well hidden. |
