I was just sitting on my bed thinking about the fact that the persistent spell feat (as presented in FR) isn't in the pathfinder game (and that they specifically have another metamagic feat called persistent spell). Anyway, it got me to thinking, and I think there should be another metamagic of a similar nature. For lack of a better sounding name, I'm referring to it as "toggle spell". Basically, I'm thinking you cast this spell that say has 20 rounds of duration... and on round 3 you decide to turn it off... you can then turn it on later and use it for 6 more rounds... so now you're down to 11 rounds worth. Thinking all rounds of usage must be used within 24 hours. Thinking raises spell level by 2 levels. Can be used with extend spell (though that increases the level an additional level). Activating a spell is an immediate action (allowing you to activate a defense if you think about it and pass a spellcraft check to know what's coming). Prerequisites: extend spell and craft contingent spell.

What do you think? Any gotchas I'm leaving out? Obviously, I didn't word it real clean above, but I wanted to get the base idea out first.

Just a thought, there are some somewhat hefty feat requirements here, but that's because I can easily see myself using this to have ironguard, stoneskin, anti-magic field, greater invisibility, etc... as commonly used defensive wards here. Given that raising them is an immediate action, it makes raising defenses a little faster... and its cheaper than keeping all these spells as contingencies.

The more I think about it, the amount of levels raised should be 3 not 2, but I'm going to list something below to make for some interesting appeal to spending more feats.

I like this (the dismissable part), as I was looking for some disclaimers. I'm thinking also, no area effects.

I'd even take the requirements a step further if using the pathfinder rules since they allow for more feats. I'd require the spell mantle feat (from LEoF). Thus, only someone willing to get extend spell, craft contingent spell, and spell mantle. If allowing the persistent spell feat from FR (which I would), I'd allow for use of either the spell mantle feat or the persistent spell feat. Now, if you were a person who end up having the persistent spell metamagic feat AND the spell mantle metamagic feat.... maybe allow any spells with the toggle spell feat to only require a 2 level raise in level.

Also, the part about if they miss the spellcraft check, my initial thoughts are to make it a swift action if they're not activating in response to something they know for certain. My viewpoint is that you're raising the level of a spell heftily in order to be able to use it a couple times in a day.

I'm thinking another thing that might be advisable is that this can only be performed with spells whose full duration does not exceed a half hour.

I think the option of turning a spell on or off would need to have something serious to counterbalance it, like penalties for casting spells, slower spellcasting for other spells, or shortened durations for other spells, while the toggled spell was paused.
