http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Ostoria

quote:
Ostoria ceased to exist after the death of Ulutiu caused his amulet to freeze a large region of Faerūn's north (present-day Pelvuria), and the deaths of most of Annam's sons

Ok so what ever was left after the dragon wars was frozen over. But dont Frost Giants thrive in cold conditons? In my opinion this event should have given the frost giants dominion over whatever was left of the kingdom.

Either way there must besome pretty colossal relics and artificts buried under that Ice...

There was frost Giant survivor state - Jhothūn - that may have actually become confused with ancient Ostoria, and that realm could sometimes be called Ostoria in texts. That would be the Frost giant Empire that you think should have survived (and obviously did).

Most giants are immune to cold, or are at least tolerant of it - I think the glacier's advance destroyed the empire more along the lines of it obliterating their settlements and wiping-out their food supply. The giants used to mostly (all?) be clustered up in the far north of Faerūn, and now they are literally 'all over the map'. Having to migrate to warmer climbs is what really destroyed their empire. There are still a very large number of giants on Toril, its just that they are spread extremely thin now, and have no real power-base.

Sounds plausible....

The "Giantcraft" product is a bit more fiction than fact, and not at all reliable in the context of Realms history. The giant kingdoms are barely touched on in the general lore, and much like elven Illefarn (which lasted as a place/region far, far longer than as an elven realm), Ostoria as a unified realm "fell" millenia before the formation of the Great Glacier. What the Great Glacier expansion did however IMO was cut off or bar most (hill, stone, fire) giants from their racial ancestral home.

Basically, I consider that "Ostoria" after the wars with the dragons was a bit like Mecca - a place to make a pilgrimage to, a home to the last great giant god temples, and a place where - by ancient oaths - no giants warred upon each other. The spread of the Great Glacier made the journey there incredibly difficult, and I have the kernel of an idea where the frost giants took this event as an omen that they were now "the most favoured" of giants, and actively worked to prevent or dissuade other giant pilgrims from going there.

The giants are an area I'd love to do a bit more history on. Given my focus on the East, I've had a few thoughts on this topic (as you can see). One day I'd like to come up with a consolidated history of the East, just as I did with the North. I've got the guts of it, but it needs ever so much more detail. That and having other writing to do. On that note, Scathril awaits.

the glacier was formed around -2500 DR, most of the giants were nearly extinct at that time anyway, or moved west (frost ones)
