Hey, I remember there being a dungeon magazine module called the well of darkness that must have come out around the time of Tome of magic and it involved vestiges (including astaroth apparently from my wiki searches). Astaroth is a demon lord who secretly invaded the devil's hierarchy to become their treasurer and who was slain by Gargauth (known as Gargoth at that time). Then there's the story of Peleveran in Powers and Pantheons where Tuelhalva Drakewings discovers an endless pit from which Gargauth's voice teaches her an incantation that frees him. Just wondering, any connections in all this? Was that endless pit the well of darkness. I never did read that adventure, but I'm thinking I really should now.

Ah, ok, though I'm still intrigued. I think I still have all my copies of dungeon from that time still in their wrappers. Think I'll go hunt it up tonight. For some reason, all this talk of Gargauth recently has put him on my mind.

Never thought about Gargauths domain, but indeed he should have a personal hell somewhere on the Primes. I always thought that was his goal: to turn Toril in his domain, changing it to his liking. But a place elsewhere on the Prime Material would make sense, as Gargoths travels were far and wide afore he set his sights on Toril.

Would be interesting to detail the world-hell he previously conquered...

You might want to ask Eric Boyd these questions as the "Well of Darkness" piece was his. He also wrote the Peleveran lore piece in GHotR.
