Do clerics' holy symbols-the one they use for a divine focus-have any special powers? I was thinking about creating symbols with small skill bonuses, or perhaps a single stored spell per day(1st level or cantrips) for mid-high level clergy. They could be a gift from the church upon attaining a new rank. Any thoughts, ideas, digressions into insanity?

Hmm, I would make a holy (or unholy) symbol that complimented the player character's deity. Thats all I can say, without a specific deity in mind, that is.......

I don't have a specific character in mind. It's more an idea, something to symboliza a players entry to a certain level-probally somewhere between 9th and 12th. By granting a cleric a minor magical item, it provides both a nice roleplaying tool and announces to the world at large that the character is fairly powerful-relatively speaking, of course.

Excellent thought, Bookwyrm. However, it appears Sourcemaster has yet to respond...

Same here. It has to be something that won't overbalance the game, but it you just treat it like a magic item that works for everyone, it ought to be okay. You can make it so that it casts what you might consider a domain's orison, if they actually had 0-level spells. (Why don't they? Doesn't make sense!) For instance, Healing would have cure minor wounds (obviously).

Or, based on a particular deity, an extra power. Mask's clerics might get holy symbols that give a bonus to Hide, Azuth's to Spellcraft. Kossuth's clerics might get a bonus to DC on fire spells (or to resist them).

It would also be helpful to know what the character's class level is, and if there are any multiclassed levels.

Indeed. But Wizards is too cheap and money-greedy.....

Boy, I'd love to get my hands on *that* holodeck program! Talk about "virtual gaming"!

So!? It was stupid, but as they say, I am extremely picky.
Bookwyrm Posted - 21 Feb 2004 : 19:41:18
So? In some older games, all the holy symbols looked like ankhs. It's probably just a limitation on the game.

When we first are talking about holy symbols........

Did anyone else then me think it was stuoid that clerics in BG 2 got a symbol of Talos even if they worshipped someone else, like Viconica who got symbol of Talos even tought she worshipped Shar?
Bookwyrm Posted - 21 Feb 2004 : 18:19:12
Holy symbols are like any other items; they can be enchanted to contain spells. Of course, they would have to be well-made, as usual. I believe the PHB has a cost for both an ordiary symbol and a well-made silver one.

Some DMs might rule that each cleric has some property unique to his or her religion embedded in a properly blessed and anointed holy symbol, much like what Shadowlord suggested. I wouldn't, since cleric domains are supposed to represent that feature.

Although, the idea that a domain's power and spells being unavailable without a divine focus (meaning the holy symbol) sounds good . . . .
Shadowlord Posted - 21 Feb 2004 : 01:56:18
Depends on what deity. Shar might have a holy symbol that could cast magical darkness 1 time per day. Tymora's might add +1 to all saving throws for a limited time. What deity would your symbol be for?
