I heard that Elminster went to earth. Is this true? If so in what novel? Was it in modern day earth?

No. And I'll say it again. NO. This has never been the case and even Ed has said, repeatedly, that El is not his alter ego.

And I just want to reinforce this, since it's important and often a point of contention for some scribes -- the "alter ego" perspective has never been anything that Ed himself has championed or promoted in his own written material.

For those with an interest in Ed's thoughts on this issue, I would suggest you look through his scrolls here at Candlekeep where the question itself has been dealt with numerous times.

Yeah, they're just friends.

He has because of Ed's Wizard Three articles in Dragon. Elminster also has, in his Safehold, according to the Realmspace Spelljammer sourcebook, two other portals to earth. One to Ed's study and another to Yellowstone in 1894. THO has also told us that the Knight's have visited Earth before.

Ed's talked about this somewhat in his replies here at Candlekeep.

Nokom, you might also want to read through those as well.

Probably because that was before we, as humans, decided to try to "fix" it. :)

I see. If I were El, I'd make a portal to Death Valley, California.

Hmmm, he likes 19th century Yellowstone? I wonder what inspired that...

One of the Dragons Three articles says that magic still exists on Earth, at least on D&D Earth, but most people don't know that they can use it or that they don't believe that it exists.

Edit: Oh yeah, Eric Boyd has also said that the Mulan's were taken from ancient Earth and brought to Faerun/Toril. :)

And not just in those articles -- he's popped up in a lot of Ed's articles, with the Old Mage dropping in on Ed and sharing Realmslore.

Khelben has too, as have some of the Seven Sisters.
