I recently got a subscription to Dragon when I heard a bunch of good FR articles would be appearing in them. I find the recent ones quite enjoyable. Yet there are obviously well over 300 issues of Dragon that preceed when I started subscribing. I would like to catch up on back issues for some of the more indispensable FR articles.

What are your favorite FR articles in Dragon?

Well, not technically Realmsian, but Ed's Nine Hells 3 parter, followed by the first appearance of Skullport, and Ed's article on creating a pantheon, but there are many. I was always a sucker for the old NPC articles and the new PrCs, so the witch NPC and the Faiths of Faerun articles (excluding my own) were pretty cool.

I consider the Nine Hells articles "Realmsian" and you should see a couple things in the coming months to prove it! :-)

Now thats just not fair.

Some favourites of mine are the NPC articles in #168, 172, 182, 187 describing Jhastar Belnold, Talantra Bowgentle, Elsura Dauniir, Baelam "The Bold", Llachior Blackthorn, Ondul Jarduth, Sharest Tanthalar, Emrock Uerngul, Mintiper Moonsilver, and Asilther Graelor.

Two more: "Curses!" (#77) and "Treasures rare and wondrous" (#80).

my favorite dragon issue ever is the one with the 4 or 5 silver haired female clerics or mages. Does anyone remember that one? All of my stuff got tossed by dear old mom when I went off to basic training. I just remember looking at the cover, almost as if it was some of the chosen, and visualizing what "my" realms were about. anyways, cool cover

Oooh! I really needed to hear that.

It will make the end result of what I'm currently attempting, that much more exciting!

Gray, ahem, the check is in the mail.... ;-) Seriously, thank you.

Honestly, I was going to say Tom Costa's Languages of the Realms article was the singular Realms article that I remember most fondly from Dragons gone by. And I don't mean to sound cheesy because Tom posted above me. I was going to say that when I read the first post.

I am a language buff, and that article thrilled the budding linguist in me. It also spoke to me of the deep history of the realms, how populations were linked by ancient ties and how they had migrated across Faerun over the ages. That's the kind of lore that fills me with a sense of wonder and brings the Realms to life for me.

who'd appreciate anyone who can come up with the issue number...

Issue 74, according to the site I linked above. Now I'm going to have to check it out when I get to work...

The Wyrms of the North were the articles that first got me interested in the Realms, so that's what I'd go for. Of course, these can now be accessed (in updated form) on the WotC website.

I don't have one particular favorite FR DRAGON article -- certainly, most of Ed's articles are the ones I enjoy the most. And their inclusion in an issue of DRAGON is, at most times, the only reason I will purchase an individual issue. The same can also be said for anything written by Eric or Steven which is included in an issue of DRAGON.

"Pages from the Mages" has always been a favorite. The "Volo" material as well. Most of what's already been mentioned above also.

Honourable mentions:- George's "Impiltur" article in #346 and Ed's "Crimmor" in #334.
Kajehase Posted - 17 Oct 2006 : 17:46:39
The various Volo's Guide to the Realms-articles are big favourites of mine, as well as Elaine's New Olamn, and Eric's on Dunspeirrin (sp?)
Wooly Rupert Posted - 17 Oct 2006 : 17:20:07
I've loved a lot of Ed's articles... The Volo stuff, the Wizards Three, the Elminster's Notes... I also love anything on Waterdeep and Undermountain.

BTW, for those that don't know of it, an easy way to track down which issue an article is in is to use The DragonDex, an up-to-date index of all of the articles in Dragon.
Lady Kazandra Posted - 17 Oct 2006 : 15:26:35
Any Dragon article written by Ed is an automatic favorite for me.

I'm going to follow George's lead though, and say that off the top of my head - -

"Seeing the Sights in Skullport" by Ed Greenwood and Steven Schend from #172. And "The Reports from Undermountain" by Steven Schend from #227.

Magic of the Seldarine, Dragon 251

Not really that FR-specific but the issue dealing with dwarves, a mid 240 thingy, is still one of my favorits. I mean the entire issue. Forge chants, etiquette, the woiks...
Uzzy Posted - 17 Oct 2006 : 11:46:17
I love Bards, so out of the few copies of Dragon ive got, its the New Olamm Bard College article from 335 by Elaine Cunningham.

Although I did enjoy the Impiltur one a whole lot too.

Almost any of Voloīs Guides therein.
George Krashos Posted - 17 Oct 2006 : 02:34:14
Off the top of my head:

"Rogue Stones and Gemjumping" and the "Pages From the Mages" series. Honourable mention for the "Wyrms of the North" article run.
