Posted - 03 Feb 2007 : 00:22:06 The Astral Planes of 3e FR Great Tree cosmology, since it has more than one [each link Toril to the outer planar homes of differing groups of deities, like the Zakharan pantheon for example], are realms of mental energy. They are silvery voids that have very little to do with real space, and everything to do with the mind. 2e's A Guide to the Astral Plane, while still a PS accessory, does provide a reasonable enough grounding for basic Astral Plane lore in the FR setting.
As for Toril's connection to "space" in the Realms -- that would be yes, and it is called Wildspace. You'll want either the Realmspace supplement (or take a look over the material at spelljammer.org) or the various SPELLJAMMER products to familiarise yourself with this fantasy space derivative in the D&D game.
