Gen Con (the worlds largest D&D convention) is comming to Indiana, Indianapolis, this summer July 24-27th. Is anyone from CandleKeep planning to attend (the one in Indiana not the UK). If so, I would like to meet some of you in-person. Let me know if you plan to attend and well figure out a way to meet.

Writing when hung over is not a good thing. What I meant to say was that Richard's trilogy will take the reader back to the dawn of Toril, but that is not where the bulk of the story will take place. It will be set primarily in 1373-74DR.

Also, some of the attendees asked/requested books, products, etc. dealing with Maztica and the other areas of Toril. However, when WotC asked for a show of hands of the whole room for a book on Maztica vs. another book about the Dalelands (as an example...there is no book like that in development)the room voted much more heavily for the later. The staff was pretty honest about the reading public's wallets doing a lot of the voting. Also, it was suggested by one of the staff members that if you feel strongly about something, write an old-fashioned letter. Much harder to ignore and much harder to delete.

One of the other popular questions was about making more maps. Again, gold coins played a part in the lack of them. They are very expensive to produce and we probably won't see as many of the big, poster-size ones any time soon. However, I think WotC saw how important they are to the public and may kick around some ideas how to get a few out there. We'll see!

Sales do bear out that many people like big event novels, but people more often argue against them on message boards. I think they've caused great harm to the Realms as a secondary world, and it's not clear to me how someone would argue in their favour. But setting this new trilogy in the 'past' might avoid the problems (barring vast retcons) and along with Ed's Knights books also not being set in the 1370s 'present' it's an interesting sign about the books department.

Thanks for the kind praise. I post on the WotC board every once in a while, but, to be honest, I enjoy this board because of the international audience it has. And Candlekeep just seems cozier, for lack of a better word. I'm still a bit jet-lagged (okay...still hung over somewhat!), but here's a couple of bits of news for the Realms.

The new D&D book Book of Exalted Deeds will be a counterpoint to the Book of Vile Darkness. It was announced that there would be some FR specific items in that manual, so keep your eyes out for it. Likewise with the Draconomicon. Both of these books will be out before year's end. Also, my fellow Sembian Richard Lee Byers announced his new trilogy which will deal mostly with dragons. The first, I believe, will be called The Rage. This trilogy will actually take the reader back to the dawn of Toril, so it should be fairly epic.

A lot of the FR fans at GenCon asked/wanted more Realms shaking novels. I think Richard's trilogy will satisfy that request. And while my book is not Realms shaking, The Crimson Gold will definitely be Thay shaking!

More highlights as they come back to me. And thank you all once again for always making me feel so welcome!

Im still trying to recover from the shock of having someone of that calibre posting here, as one of us...

I feel even more deprived not being able to attend. Imagine they hosted events over here. Haha, who am I kidding...

Sounds awesome though, did anyone take pics that we can take a look at?

Well Met

Thank ye for bringing this news to Candlekeep, Voronica. 'Tis greatfully received. Im sure many other scribes are eager, like myself, to hear more of that transpired at GENCON
Faraer Posted - 27 Jul 2003 : 18:45:31
Voronica, great to get Gen Con news for us who couldn't go. Is there any news on game products or novels, or salacious gossip about Rich Baker or Uncle Weirdbeard, that you could pass on?

Meanwhile, here's a brief Q/A with Ed from the con.

I can only stutter my humble appreciation for your reply miss veronica. And vaguely indicate my regret at also being unable to attend this year. Perhaps next, who knows. Don't worry, you'll notice me, i'll be the troll by the snack table...

So, GenCon has gone very well, considering there was quite a change from WI to Indiana. Folks are still wandering around a bit trying to figure out where everything is, but I understand about 27,000 dedicated souls managed to find there way here for at least some of the four days.

The FR reception was Thursday night and Ed, Elaine, Bob, Richard Lee Byers, Thomas Reid, Paul Kemp and I answered questions and mingled for some two hours. There, Peter Archer gave me the go-ahead to release the name of my fifth book with WotC. The working title is Queen of the Depths and it is a part of the Priests Series.

To answer Malanthius, I wrote a Ravenloft novel with James Lowder, Spectre of the Black Rose. For the FR line, I was one of the authors of Halls of Stormweather , and solo for Sands of the Soul and the upcoming The Crimson Gold.

If this post is reading a little fuzzy, I think it is because I spent too long sipping ale with Ed Greenwood, James Lowder, Dale Donovan, Rich Baker, Eric Boyd, Troy Denning and Steve Winter. Rough way to spend the evening. We even managed to shut the bar down, but how could we not with Elminster amongst our numbers!

I'll post more after I wing my way home.

Oh how I wish I were a resident of the US..... if only for GENCON
Voronica Whitney-Robinson Posted - 12 Jul 2003 : 20:06:13
I will be attending as well as James Lowder and Dave Gross (I think he and Paul Kemp are scheduled for a book signing). Quite a few of us will be at the Forgotten Realms Reception Thursday night. Hope to see folks there!

Sorry, it's a bit too far for me to go with my current load. Only a couple of states over, but it's still too far.

I was hoping to try and make the trip from Australia this year, but my exam schedule was changed back in April from September-October, to July-August, so... However, I plan to make the attempt regardless of the situation next year.
