hi there!
iīm new at candlekeep.
itīs nice to have a place where one can talk with guys, who seems to like the same things that i do!
iīm spending very much time in reading books, (only fantasy) and in my brain there is a place, where everything i read becomes reality. if just for a moment. iīm not the guy, who walks around, mourning, that we live in the reality we live in (nice), but i donīt regret a single moment spent with my books, with my fantasy, with my imagination.

Well in response to that, Yes it really hurts. Whenever I try do things to make my reallity better, some thing always pushes me back into a hole then I have to start all over again. So, I will say again, yes my reallity bites to hurt. |

since i started this topic, i am very interested to keep it going but sometimes things are better left unsaid.
this doesnīt mean that you good fellows should stop posting in this topic on the opposite (?spelling?).
but donīt force yourselves to spheres you donīt want to enter.
but beware, donīt forget where you can haul out your anchor to get back to reality, or you are lost on your fantastic sea.
there might be some stormy weather you wonīt survive. (bildlich gesprochen)

Hmm, What happened to this topic? It seems some have gotten a little bored with this. So why is that? I guess sometimes you have to face reality. That is sad though. I really thought this was an interesting topic. Reality bites, in my case. |

i donīt think this has nothing to do with this topic
i rather think it hits the mark clean!
what would our world be without the fantasies of inventors.
imgine what would make your life better, see it, invert it.
that is how our society works.
there is a problem: solve it.
in every aspect of our lives we would be nothing without our imagination:
how boring would be a cloudy sky, if you canīt look up and see various things in the clouds???
how minor would be our life, if we donīt have a dream to follow, if we just live every single day without thinking of the future, without anything to anticipate, without anything to hope for???
our mind and free will are the things that make life worth living!!! |

Thank you fanatic. But I can go on..and on.. The humans ability to reason is what set us above the evolutionary gene pool. But its our ability to imagine that has given us over to a higher echelon of goals. Our ability to dream and seek out higher standards is what has pushed us forard at the alarming rate in just the recent 50 years. According to New Scientist magazine the human races' IQ is increasing with each generation. How could we have done that without imagination. Even world famous people have goals and dreams. I have a dream.. Martin Luthar King.. I visualise my targe before I strike.. Bruce Lee.. I can see the hoop so clearly that I can shoot with my eyes closed.. Michael Jordan.. And last but not least I wonder what happens if you press this button.. BOOM.. Tae Fisher AKA Osmo  . Maybe this has absolutly nothing to do with the topic, but I think it does. Goal,dream,visualise,imagine, these are the things that make up fantasy genre too.. OK I've preached to the converted for long enough. I'll get down off my soapbox now.  Stalks haughtilly out of the room. |

there are many wise words in your reply, osmo!
the way we think makes it possible to spend time in a way, that makes us happy without hurting anybody, without breaking any laws, without causing any problems to a third.
if there is a fight, someone may be killed, but in our world there is a chance of resurrection, and even if that fails, the gods will welcome us with open arms.
that is the reaosn why we come back to our realms of fantasy every time possible. |

This topic is a good one, and there are several reasons why. The imagination is a precious thing (MY PRECIOUS) but seriously a realm of fantasy can get creative juices flowing. People need escape whether that be drugs - for some, sport, eating or for the pure of heart role playing. I for one have no regrets. I can still remember the first game I sat in on and played. There was no ridiculing if I made a mistake or said the wrong thing. It was simply accepted then explaned to me later the correct way things were done. Now after playing for quite a few years the feeling I get when the bad guy gets it or I find that useful item is still just a exciting as it was the first night I started. That is the reason I enjoy this genre. And not just for the game, books also gave a much needed escape. Escape is probable too strong a word but relief from reality in any case. As many of you have posted books complement the imaginative mind and aid in role playing. There is nothing wrong with immersing yourself in the role of a character, from book or game. Infact I'd say it helps the creative process. Steven Brust's Taltos the Assassin helped with my loveble rogue character, and gave me a few laughs. Reality is something we have to pay bills, for loved one's, children and stress. Fantasy is the same...Just without the bills :). |

Well, personally, sometimes it is wonderfull to have an escape. The real world just seems so boring at times. Most people in the real world times can really be morons.Where as for books, if you don't like the way someone is acting you can just turn the page. Hail Sylvanis. |

to me it seems that ther is just no simple solution to the things going on in, around and outside the realms.
if there is one, many things just wouldnīt occur.
but if every single mind sees the better and trys the best, many problems woudld have a solution.
but: there also would be new problems.
so is this world we live in really so bad, that we must flee to our fantastic realm, where everything can be as we want it?????????? |

fanatism in any way can be dangerous, if there is nothing to control it. if you have a strong mind you can risk it. the worst thing that can happen is a guy who walks around, sure of something he thinks "the right thing" and doesnīt accept other opinions.
anyway, there isnīt much danger growing a bit fanatic on a thing such as the realms, as long as you can find the way back to the real world at any time.
may mystra watch over any fanatic like me.

Hmmmm, fanatic? You fanatism can lead to dangerous situations. IMO a lot of causes were worth defending them, but nothing is only good or only bad, and fanatism leads to misunderstanding, fear and stupidity.

I understand exactly what you mean Fanatic. Reading and writing fantasy is a brief escape for me as well. If the author is a good one, and the story well written, I can lose myself in a book easily and feel like I am part of the story.
I write some fantasy, and a bit of sci fi, and I find it helps me to relax. |

well, i have to say, that iīm real glad having found this page. there is a lot of wisdome to be found here.
realmslore!!!
now if you read books one can escape reality but the fine thing is, that you can do it every time you want it. wherever, whenever and for how long you like to.
just donīt forget, that there are some things that are worth coming back to the real world.
think about it!

personally, i am in the fantasy world all the time, and only once in a while do i cast Lvl 8 - Call of the PC which i use to meld with the internet to come talk to all of you

Welcome Fanatic and there are others besides guys. I know what you mean, reality is fine, but it's nice to escape the real world every now and again. I just finished 'The Savage Caves.' Now I have started reading "ELMISTER" 'The Making Of A Mage.' |
