Hello! I'm MrHedgehog.
I never noticed this was sort of used as an "Off Topic" forum here before, so I thought i'd make a thread now...since I can't sleep.
I read that some of you seem to be parents and I was surprised. So I wonder if any of you university/college students, like me? If so what are you taking? Or... what did you (or would like to have?) take if or when you went to university? I'm curious what other Candlekeepers think about in the real world.
I'm currently working on a BA in Linguistics with a minor in Speech science at the University of Calgary. My intention is to become a speech pathologist (AKA speech therapist) I took history and philosophy already (At the University of Alberta), and... discovered nobody cares if you know history or what old dead people thought 
This spring/summer i'm taking Statistics and have stayed up late worrying about my final spring term exam grade... that hasn't been posted yet even though the exam was 1.5 weeks ago and it was multiple choice. (The course is two terms/semesters) Refreshing doesn't seem to be making the professor post our marks at 3:30 a.m.  |

Well, it is mostly the Greek and Roman cultures which I am studying (I am in a Classics department).
I am also very much interested in linguistics - I hope you will enjoy it! |

My friend is starting a Master's Degree in "Greek and Roman Studies" (What people call Classics at most schools, I think, or at least at the first university I went to it was) I bet you'd have a lot to talk about Thieran = D Although maybe not since the Mediterranean is a huge region and I don't know what you've studied specifically.
Since i've made this thread i've decided to stick with Linguistics/Psychology.

My degree was in Russian history/language. The biggest reason people fall back on when defending liberal arts education is that it teaches you how to think. Studying history does that, and to me it has always seemed like a happy medium between mathematics, where there is essentially one right answer to a problem, and literature, where you can interpret something as you like as long as you support those interpretations and present them in a clear and grammatically correct manner. Apologies to lit majors, it wasn't meant to imply that youre all talented bs artists. I'm at this site because I love to read. I don't play d&d, I just really enjoy fantasy novels. Reading anything and analyzing it makes you think. I wish I had taken more literature classes in college. And clearly, there are plenty of revisionists running around out there...With history, there is still plenty of wiggle room to argue, but there are certain things that are generally not up for debate. I mean, stuff actually happened.
I try to not go around telling people both what I studied in school and what I do for a living, because most people I knew from school go "oh, really? How did you end up doing that?" Or people at work laugh that the only thing I've ever used my degree for has been eavesdropping on conversations and yelling at people who thought they were being clever. But it is interesting to look at the difference between a history-based four years of college courses vs. paramedic school where the material is ingrained through so much repetition, and the importance of muscle memory. It teaches you to react rather than reflect, or something. But with language, as they say, "repetition is the mother of learning." And what do I know, I'm just some kid who drives around in an ambulance. |

I'm actually a high schooler xD I think history is one of the most important subjects ever. Plus Literature and artistic classes. |

I finished my Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering about a year and a half ago, and haven't been able to find work in my field (a combination of companies letting folks go and not rehiring, changing entry-level positions into 2-5 year minimum positions, and employers snapping up laid-off experienced engineers at entry-level salaries) despite continual job hunting, networking, and the like. So I may be attending graduate school for my Master's out of desperation.  |

I am finishing a PhD in Classical (i.e. Mediterranean) Archaeology at the moment - I enjoyed it a lot but I will be very happy when it's done... |

I just finished my degree, in May, for culinary after three years. Now, I'm signed up for Nutrition for another four years, which starts in the fall. It felt really strange and anxious to college in my 30's. Especially when most of my classmates are in the late teens, early 20's. |

I studied journalism at college and then comparative literature at uni. If I had to do it again I would do history and political theory. |

it's a sad thing, hat folks these days don't care about History... I've given up trying to convince folks it matters directly. I'll just continue to be an example, and bide my time with gentle "I told you so"s.
myself, I'm someone who tends to be a bit of an anachronism. I simply don't fit in with anyone realy, because I have beliefs and behaviors that do not match my generation. it leads to some social issues....
anywho, I'm working on an Associate's Degree, majoring in Criminal Justice. I intend to transfer to a University for my Bachelor's, and go to Law School to become a Civil Lawyer. |
