I’ve been reading stuff about Cormyr and Ravenloft for a couple of weeks now and I’ve been asking myself: Why James Lowder doesn’t write new novels?
I’ve read Knight of the Black Rose and it was an amazing read! Then, I read Crusade, third book of the Empire Trilogy, and it was astonishing! Every time I read a book from Lowder it finished with a “wow” to myself. I will read his other 2 books in the Realms in the next week.
But, why this guys isn’t writing new novels? He has the talent of Salvatore or Wise/Hickman. If someone at Wizards sees this, I hope you will hire this amazing author for more novels.
I know that I’m like 15 years too late but I’m a new fan of James Lowder and I can only hope for more novels “in the realms” from him. :)

Hi:
Some of the chapter titles for Prince of Lies were inspired by the Oingo Boingo album Dead Man's Party, but not the character of Cyric itself.

Wow. Thanks for all the kind words.
I'm actually in discussions with a publisher about a novel trilogy, and might even seal the deal at Gen Con this year. It's not a Realms novel, or from Wizards, but it is dark fantasy, so if you've enjoyed my other books, you should enjoy these.
You're right about my career path, though. Because I'm an editor, as well as a writer, I work behind the scenes a lot, and after leaving TSR, it has been easier to get work editing. It's also harder to get creator-owned books published, and I'm less interested in writing in other people's worlds these days. (I've actually turned down firm offers to write about twice the number of novels I've published, some of them quite high profile.)
Even if the deal I'm supposed to discuss at Gen Con falls through--and that happens a fair amount, too; books get planned and publishers get bought or lines get canceled--it's still pretty likely I'll get another novel out...eventually.

I'm aware of some of his other works and it is always a good read. My point was more that usually, the writers begin with short stories in anthologies and then move on to bigger projects like a novel. It seems that the career of mr. Lowder (and I have a great respect for him) took the other way. I'm sure that the Games: The 100 Best is a very good project for him and I wish him good luck.
But I'm "selfish" in a way ;) cauz his novels are so good that I wished more! But I understand his feeling about "shared world."
So, James Lowder is a great talent and if he write a new novel, (FR or Not) I will buy it for sure! |

Not to mention a really good essay that he wrote in Len Wein's Unoffical X-Men book that is not only relevant to X-Men and comic books stories, but to shared world fiction as well.
I'd love to see James take another shot at the Realms, but then again, I'd love to see Jeff Grubb do at least one more Alias book as well. |

Ed Greenwood says he's a superb editor, too. Ed has written many stories for Jim's anthologies in the past, including an Arthurian tale, two zombie stories for the Books of All Flesh (Eden Studios will be reprinting these soon), a superhero story for Guardians of the Just, and contributions to a book that should be shipping any day now, Astounding Hero Tales (from Hero Games, a collection of "pulp" adventure stories), and a book that should debut at GenCon: Hobby Games: The 100 Best, in which Jim Lowder prevailed on "anyone who's anyone" in the game industry to write a short essay on one of their favorite games of all time.
In short, Mister Lowder is busy, and deservedly so. I expect to see more novels from his pen in the future, but probably not Wizards novels.
As for WHERE he is: everyone's entitled to their privacy, but his nearest "big city" would probably be Milwaukee.

Indeed he has done some outstanding work in novels, and I for one would love to see him writing in our beloved Realms again  |

"Prince of Lies is even better" I heard that a lot! I'm going to buy it for sure! I like his style of writing! It is strange that he wrote 4 books in such a short time period and after he hasn't been contracted to write any new FR novels. Is it by choice? If not, I'm ready for a "Bring Back James Lowder in the Realms" petition! ;)
By the way, I sound like a kid who just read his first book, but i'm not! I'm 30 years old and Ive read a lot of books, it's just that I've missed them when they came out and when I've finished Crusade this morning I was like a kid in need of a hero lol!!! |
