LOL - just found this thread.

They did indeed use the crappy one.
They couldn't have used Shley's Cormyr map?

Still, cool tech.

The most obvious application for this sort of tech, in D&D gaming, is to remove the DM, perhaps remove the other players. Pre-made adventures could be sold, ready to play, essentially just another solo-player or online multiplayer video game - something with both positive and negative aspects. There's also some merit to the criticism about graphically-rich animations replacing imagination, and about people's thinking being constrained by the limitations built into the box.

From a franchise point of view this thing is a godsend. It's "intuitive" and heavily developed by Microsoft, so it's obvious that the technology is intended for all sorts of applications. Once the price gap reaches parity we'll see these touch displays installed on mainstream laptops and kiosks ... yes, that means a lot of greasy fingerprints. But think of how hard it would be to pirate the latest D&D modules when they come packaged with physical props and play aids which also happen to function as software keys ... can't use the book/module without the exact figurine the code is designed to work with.

What about taking a standard LCD monitor, mounted below glass in a table? ;)

Ever since I saw the Surface a year or more ago, I've always wanted a VT or similar program that would just give me the ability to import maps and have a decent fog of war, and that's it. No LAN ability, no dice rollers, no character gens. Just the absolute basic mapping/revealing program. The rest would be traditional tabletop; minis, character sheets, and dice.

yeah not a fan of that map, just thinking of the possibilities of this software/MSSurface if this pricetag comes down

Don't crush my dreams! Seriously, that cost should drop tenfold in 4-5 years (unless its a flop). That's how tech marketing goes.
