Hello again! Sorry if I am asking a "boring" question. I am curious about this sun elf who is known as Jander Sunstar, while I do not have the Ravenlorft "Vampire of the Mists" novel, I would greatly appreciate if anyone could provide me with a detailed history of Jander's background and travels. Thanks in advance to all.

You're essentially correct. It's long been an element of RAVENLOFT lore that the Vistani have some [as yet] unexplainable method of safely traversing the Mists. Whether by spell, potion, or some other means, the Vistani can often safely navigate their way through the troublesome Mists, and find their desired destination.

Yeah, if i remember correctly the Vistani are able to travel between the different kingdoms (Darkon, Barovia, etc), but none are able to leave the Domains of Dread.

That is how I remember it.

Any updates on Jander Sunstar since the last reply to this topic?

I am after a long time rereading "Vampire of the Mists" and it would be nice to learn if he finally could leave Ravenloft at all.

I don't think the Mists will let anyone leave

No new updates, unfortunately.

The last we heard from Jander was in the 3e RAVENLOFT setting published by White Wolf. His existence as per the end of Vampire of the Mists, as I elaborated above several years ago, remains all we know on Jander's fate.

Was agreeing on the afraid of coming back as something worse. Sorry if my earlier post implied you thought he was a whiner also.

And he did have a chance of a "peaceful existance" but he chose to kill people to help others, and damned himself for eternity. He was given shelter by some followers of either Edath or Silvanus, and left the sanctuary after being told he could never go back if he left.

Personally, I hated the character. I felt he always whined. I think if you are that unhappy being undead then you destroy yourself.

Of course, before you slam me let me say I did read this like when I was 14 so maybe it would be different the second time through.

No, he is a whiner, and was afraid of coming back as something worse like Wooly said.

Jander wasn't adverse to the idea of destroying himself. The problem was, he was worried about coming back as something worse than a vampire. The legends he knew suggested that crimson deaths were born from slain vampires.

There was also a short story about Janders' past in a Realms Anthology......can not recall which one...now I need to unpack all of those boxes in storage to find out.

There are three stories actually. They include: "One Last Drink" from Realms of Valor, "The Quiet Place" from Realms of Magic, and "Blood Sport" from Realms of Infamy.

Hey, I last read Vampire of the Mists a month after its initial release date .
Kianna Posted - 26 Oct 2005 : 02:43:23
I am glad you mentioned it because I read that book almost a millenia ago and I couldn't for the life of me remember Jander's name.
The Sage Posted - 26 Oct 2005 : 02:39:15
Although Jander wanted to die in rays of the sun, the Mists of Ravenloft snatched him away before he could be burned, determined to keep him alive in his tortured existence. You can find out more about Jander's current status in Children of the Night: Vampires. Jander is also updated to 3rd Edition in Champions of Darkness.
Kianna Posted - 26 Oct 2005 : 02:34:14
Did he die at the end of Vampire of the Mists?
The Sage Posted - 26 Oct 2005 : 02:19:16
Also Magus, I suggest you duck on over to the "Fraternity of Shadows" website. Many of Jander's exploits in the Domains of Dread can be readily learned in numerous online discussions, most of which are archived on the mainsite.

Villian's Lorebook has it as well and it's one of the free downloads on the WOTC site in the Old Downloads section. :)
