I'd like to find a good recording of a tavern or drinking song. Don't want it to have any overpowering instruments (the singing to be dominate), and for it to be riotious. Much as the drinking songs that are sung in movie Beowulf.

I can only find recordings that are just not right.

Anyone know of a good source?

Good stuff from what tidbits I can listen to. Any specific songs you'd suggest?

I've been busy setting Ed's "Haunted" ballad [from chap. 14 of The Sword Never Sleeps] to some music that I have been composing. It's described in the text as a "well-known tavern song" -- but my actual working is nowhere near ready.

I suppose I could send you a sample, if you're interested.

I'll send you the brief 15 second sample first. The rest of what I've written so far still sounds rough, and I'm not comfortable with the idea of releasing that just yet.

Yes I love the many songs that are in that game. I've found recordings of many of them. Very good stuff.

I think what I'm really looking for would be called a Lymeric, right?

Well...I have always thought that limericks were not set to music and were usually somewhat suggestive in origin. Usually about someone from somewhere and what they could do with their own or someone else's naughty bits(euphemism blatantly stolen from THO cause it made me giggle).

Not really sure what you would call the style you are looking for...tavern drinking songs? theme music to get blotto by?

How about the song Merry and Pip sing in the LoTR movies?

Yep, another fine example. =)

As my original post, I would call them Tavern Drinking Songs. The activity isn't really popular these days (at least not in the states), so there isn't much out there on them.

Yes this fine drinking tradition has been supplanted by the nefarious pastime of KARAOKE...where instead of losing your horrible voice in a crowd of other, equally drunk, horrible voices you can now make a fool of yourself all alone....on a stage...mucking up the lyrics to well known rock ballads, and getting laughed at by all the people you laughed at when THEY were singing

If I remember correctly the Ivy League schools had some fight songs that were usually sung whilst drinking...not sure if the drinking was a prerequisite or if was just because they were always drunk?

What did a web search get ya? Tried Youtube?

Nice...so I have to ask...is this for background music for a game your running? Or is this just for easy listening in the car at rush hour?

Did you receive my sample, Wenin? I'm not sure whether I converted the file format properly for the email, so I'm curious as to whether it came through on your end.

Teneck,
Background music. I've always wanted to play a good tavern song when the party is in such a tavern.

Sage,
It hasn't made it.

Ah. Likely a conflict with SageOS. I'll correct the format and send it to you over the weekend.

Probably not exactly what you're looking for, but how about "the Wild Rover" (Dropkick Murphys version is quite nice)? There's one song that always triggers images of taverns and rough-looking fellas drumming their tankards on the tables.
