Friends from Candlekeep,

I have the 1992 Fantasy Collection Cards, with monsters, NPCs and magical itens for AD&D, and in one of the cards is the most famous panther in fantasy, Drizzt Do'Urden's companion Guenhwyvar.

The picture in the card is part of a painting that, if I'm not wrong, was one of the many pieces of Clyde Caldwell. However, I don't remember where I have seen the complete picture, and I never found it again on books, or over the internet - not even in many Caldwell galeries, official or not, I've checked in the last years...

Anyone there knows where can I find this picture?

You can always send him an e-mail inquiring about the piece. Last month I asked him about the Pool of Radiance piece he did back in the late 1980’s. I wanted to know if he had any prints for sale. He was prompt with a response and after a while I learned the actual name of the piece, when it was first produced, and he didn’t make any prints to sale. That all changed after I was done talking with him. He will soon offer prints for sale on his website.
So send him an e-mail at Clydeosaur (remove this)@(remove this)aol.com
If there is enough demand he may make some prints, if he was the actual artist.
Good luck and let us know how everything turns out!

I hope Candlekeep continues to be the friendly forum of fellow Realms-lovers that it has always been, as we all go through this together. If you don’t want to move to the “new” Realms, that doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with either you or the “old” Realms. Goodness knows Candlekeep, and the hearts of its scribes, are both big enough to accommodate both. If we want them to be.

Enough for now. The Realms lives! I have spoken! Ale and light wines half price, served by a smiling Storm Silverhand fetchingly clad in thigh-high boots and naught else! Ahem . .

Definately sounds like one of those extremely rare and obscure pieces. Can you scan it perhaps??

I've scanned it, can I paste it here, or attach the picture to a message? Must I make it through a hyperlink?

You could always upload the image to some image-host site and hyperlink it i suppose. I would be interested in seeing that pic myself. Caldwell's paintings always spurred my imagination when i was young and new to roleplay.

I can usually give you a site with the original, IF I knew exactly what pic you are referring to.

Well, Mr. Caldwell answered my e-mail and told me the piece wasn't his... He said it was probably designed by John & Laura Lakey or Ron & Val Lindahn. I'll try to hyperlink it somehow (unlike most of my friends, I'm not a great computer user).

With a little help from my younger brother, I managed to put the picture online.

Here is the link: <link removed>
Hope someone can help me...

For some reason, it's reminding me of a Maztica/Al-Qadim/Kara-tur (?) sourcebook cover...

Aren't you guys thinking of the Maztica cover that has a jaguar knight in the cover?

The only Kara-Tur modules that could have a panther, as far as I remember, would be the ones that deal with the Black Leopard Cult, but I don't think this panther demigod appears in the cover of any of these books.

In Zakhara, I remember seeing a winged panther in a palace in one of the covers, but the picture is very different form the one I'm looking for...

Mmm. Looks nearly like the pic in the excerpt from Reader's Guide to the Legend of Drizzt about her, but not exactly. No other clue...

And about the picture, have you ever seen it before?

Zireael, I dunno which pic is in Reader's Guide excerpt, but I have the book, and will check it out at home tonight. Thank you for the clue, anyway!

Alisttair, it's one of my favorite pics of the panther, even if it shows it having golden eyes - Guen's eyes are green, if I recall properly. But I never thought it was SO obscure.

The style appears to be similar to John & Laura Lakey. I suggest going to their website and contacting them. I don't think it was from a cover. It could be interior artwork.

After scanning it, I also had this impression. I couldn't find their website earlier (once again barred by my own meager computer skills)...
But now I entered http://lakeygallery.com/ and found a "contact us" there. Just sent a message to the e-mail account the link addressed to...

Did anyone stop to think that that particular pic may have been from a non-FR product?

If they had a piece of artwork with a black panther, and they were going to crop it anyway, it could be from just-about anywhere.

It looks familiar to me - I checked all my K-T products - thought it might have something to do with the Black Panther Cult, but nada. Quite a bit of non-FR art made it into FR splat-books in 2e.

It does have an "early 90's" look to it.

Thank you once again, Markustay. Do you write/speak some portuguese? Well, it was published in the early 90's...
And it was indeed an original FR product. Just got Mrs. Laura Lakey response to my e-mail, and that's her answer:

"Hi Silvio,

Yes, that is one of ours, but it's a stand-alone piece, not part of a larger painting. When we did the cards, we signed a contract with TSR (now WOC) giving them all rights so if you use it, you might need to contend with them.

If that's a favorite character of yours, we can always do a painting of her for you on commission, and it would be much nicer than the card. If you haven't already, check out our website and also my western art website. Take care,

Laura Lakey"

So, I think that settles the question. I just had a strong impression that it was part of a larger painting.
