the Titans/Giants thread had a tangent discussion about the Great Glacier so I broke it off here so as not to derail that topic...
I would like us to put our heads together to clear up the dates/causes/errata/unanswered questions of the Great Glacier to clear up some issues with differing sources
here is just a sampling of what I have in my notes and I'll keep digging and everyone feel free to correct/add to it and I'll keep editing the original Post:
quote: -2550 – Ulutiu, a minor sea-deity, exiles himself to the astral plane. His ice necklace sinks, creating the Great Glacier (FRCS p268) (GG p5)
-2475 – Great Glacier continues to grow, covering the lands of Narfell, Vaasa and Damara (GG p5)
-2274 – Clan of exiled shield dwarves from the Tortured Lands travel to the Novularond and are the forebears of the arctic dwarven race, the Innugaakalikurit (GG p5)
-1648 – Hunters from Sossal get lost while searching for game on the Great Glacier. They eventually come to the Lugalpgotak Sea where they for a permanent settlement and become the precursors of the Iulutiuns (GG p6)
-1362 – Descendents of the first Ulutiun settlers discover The Glacier of Ulutiu near the Uppuk River and settle nearby becoming the forebears of the Nakulutiuns (GG p6)
-1186 – Lured by an abundance of caribou, an Iulutiun faction moves to Angalpuk and are the first of the nomadic Angulutiuns (GG p6)
-901 – The Innugaakalikurit and the Ulutiuns establish cordial trading relations (GG p6)
-760 – The Year of the Great Flood in the Great Glacier as an unusually hot summer cause the waters of the Ngalpgotak and Lugalpgatok Seas rise and engulf many Uluitiun villages (GG p6)
-598 – The Frost Giants and the Innugaakalikurit begin a series of wars and disputes that still occur to this day (GG p6)
-212 – Ufloq appears from the Olyniak Crevasse and devours dozens of Nakaulutiuns before returning to the crevasse. This monster, described as a white dragon hybrid with gold fangs and as large as a mountain, has not been seen since (GG p6)
460 – Sossrim hunters are carriers of a disease that wipes out many Angulutiuns and the caribou on which they survive (GG p6)
1038 – Large-scale immigration begins into Narfell, Damara, and Vaasa. These countries are now fully free of ice as the Great Glacier has retreated due to a rotational shift of Toril that has caused global temperatures to rise (FRCS p270) (RoF p89) (GG p7) (Dragon #346 p70) (RtR p15) (SotR p5)
1141 – Evil wizards from Vaasa magically construct a castle of Ice at the base of Mt. Okk (GG p7)
1148 – Icequake rocks the Lugsaas Chain, the Vaasan wizards and their ice castle are engulfed in the fissure and an avalanche buries it (GG p7)
1227 – Palus Frohm, a Vaasan explorer, begins his twenty year trek through the Great Glacier, culminating in the writing of the arctic survival guide ‘Blood and Ice: Survival in the great Glacier’ (GG p7)
1339 – Sharra Frohm, great-great-great granddaughter of Palus, writes Volume Two of ‘Blood and Ice’. Concentrating on the Nakvaligach region which Palus never got to explore. Sharra hasn’t been heard from since she left on her journey (GG p7)

i noticed that the timeline mentions 75 years between necklace magic starting and Damara and Vaasa coverd
quote: -2550 – Ulutiu, a minor sea-deity, exiles himself to the astral plane. His ice necklace sinks, creating the Great Glacier (FRCS p268) (GG p5)
-2475 – Great Glacier continues to grow, covering the lands of Narfell, Vaasa and Damara (GG p5)
and in Giantcraft it mentions the necklace played out after 75 years
dont know if significant but was at least it seemed the canon matched from two different sources/authors |

The Great Glacier also mentions that Ulutiu IS buried with his necklace under the ice. The necklace shunts heat into the mountains where the Frost Giants live...and thus those mountains are like a heat sink.
I kinda like the idea that because the glacier grew so very quickly that it changed weather...only to cause further growth of the glacier. Now, much later, the Great Glacier is slowly receding back to the extent of the Necklace's power.
I think there are two things to consider here as far as the timeline goes:
The Necklace didn't sink and cause the Great Glacier until -2,550
There was a "Tear Fall" much earlier that could have caused a Glacier to be there...I'll look more into this aspect. |
