LGBTQ characters being killed off for tragedy is an unfortunately common troupe, and unfortunately I think this is what Salvatore was going for without realizing the history of the troupe. I'm sure it's been pointed out to him by now, so hopefully-maybe there will be some better representation in future stuff he writes.
D&D hasn't had a great track record with LGBTQ characters in past editions. I was looking through the 4e book "Menzoberranzan: City of Intrigue" and this reminded me how the explicitly lesbian Matron mother Triel got killed offscreen and replaced with Quenthel, whose own interest in women in the WotSQ series went unmentioned...but they *did* make sure to set her up with seven kids! I guess even in 4e WotC wasn't ready to have major characters in published gamebooks be gay. |
