Here is a fellow Realms DM in need of aid.

I'm currently experiencing a kind of inspirational lack. Don't hold it after me that this might come out a bit overlong.

General notes on what I got, first.

I'm going to start a new Realms campaign soon after having passed my exams in february and march. The setting will be the Western Heartlands with Baldur's Gate being the starting point.

I have decided that the main opponent for the PCs will be the Cult of the Dragon, but they are not meant to learn that early on in the campaign. The cult has a covert agent in the city, a sage on many things who hires adventurers to explore some place where they are ambushed by cultmembers.

Since I have to do some learning for abovementioned exams, I decided to adapt "Mad God's Key" (Dungeon #114)as introductory adventure, wherein a cult of vecna robs a magic open-all-locks key to, well, open a locked book resting in a library.

To get the key, the cult infected a minor group of thieves with a disease and then came to them in the guise of a cleric of a benevolent deity, asking them a favor for curing them. The guild thieves take the key and are left to waste away while the cult can steal the book.

From here on everything takes another direction than the Dungeon adventure.

Now comes my problem for me, I simply seem unable to come up with the following two things:

1. Just what kind of book (or item/thing, whatever) is it the cult of the dragon could want?

2. Why does the cult long to possess the book. I didn't like the idea that it is a tome of the dragon, as a cult cell usually has one.

So, here I am, hoping for ideas that kindle my imagination. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Happy gaming

As the key opens all locks it does not be a locked tome, which gives you a lot of options.

Things that could be wanted to retrieve could be Dragon orbs (if they still exist) contianed in a chest, it could behaps be a locked tome of new spells (if you want to add an expansion), it could be recovery of cult items that were taken from another unit that was raided and/or distroied and of course it could be simple treasure. There are many things that can be locked up, the reasons to seek out the short list I offer should be fairly self-explaining.

Borch, the Forgotten Realms section of the WotC site has regular updated articles on magical books of Faerun. Perhaps you could use one of those in your campaign.

BTW, have you read The Rage and The Rite by Richard Lee Byers yet? These two novels focus on a large Cult of the Dragon plot to take over Faerun so perhaps you could combine that story into your campaign.
