In the original FR release, several geographical areas of the world were going to be designated as "off limits" by developers so that gamers could have free reign. Obviously, the original standing order went by the way side. My question; does anyone know of any areas that are "out of play" for the developers? It can be frustrating to adopt an area, develop it, and then have an offical product released that conflicts with what you've created. Not a huge gripe, but it has that "immanent domain" feel to it sometimes.

Wait til you see Power of Faerun. You will be bombarded with so many sacred cows that I think being crushed by raining herds of beef with legs will seem a commonplace effect.

I recall Sembia and the Serpent Hills from the Old Grey Box.

Areas that won't see development in a "near" future ?

We can guess some :
Erlkazar (was "deleted" from 3.x maps)
Hartsvale (it's on SM maps but... well..)
The Tortured Lands (but nothing much there)
All east of UE (Hordelands, Kara-Tur)
The Old empires (well, I would be really surprised)
Zkahara
Maztica & Anachrome
Sossal

Yep, Sembia and Serpent Hills were off limits for development....for about ten seconds. Serpent Hills was developed a little in Elminster's Ecologies and Sembia has been in several products. I have not read every novel, so not sure how much Sembia is used other than traveling through. I find it easier to pick a "blank" spot on the map and develop it. This way, whatever I develop what conflict and I can work in my NPCs with bordering regions and events.

Sembia's been used, at least since 2E, as a foil for Cormyr (my memory's not good on the area prior to FRA)... if for no more reason than the Zhentarim can't seem to march an army past Shadowdale and everything to the south seems occupied with itself. Following Azoun's death, Sembia's taken a bigger role in trying to destabilize Cormyr, though not necessarily as a prelude for invasion.

In Sembia's case, it would be almost impossible to to have it be "hands off" just based on its geographically location. Way too many events going on in that region over the years to ignore.

serpent hills are dowsed with history in the serpent kingdoms tome
sossal might soon be featured idk, there was some mention in some recent tome about something north of sossall i think but again i could be wrong.... i hd been using sossal because of its humans who are skilled with nature... using the humans i should say ::evilglare::

i have this problem soemtimes... but mostly i can work around it

Speaking of being bombarded by sacred cows... In a recent adventure I ran, the party was being rushed by a group of yuan-ti running up the stairs out of a basement in the backroom of a tavern.

The priest of Horus-Re summoned a celestial bison in the air above the opening to the staircase and dropped it down on the yuan-ti with a loud plaintive moo.

I still don't know if this was strictly legal, but the image was so priceless that I allowed it. A fitting end to the yuan-ti rogues. Clerics can always be trusted to drop a load of bull on you. I thought this was a particularly novel use of a "sacred cow".

Now the cleric is looking forward to the day when he can summon a celestial whale...

You're not going to allow him to do that without access to the infinite improbability drive, I hope?

There is a rumour going around that I have found god. I think is unlikely because I have enough difficulty finding my keys, and there is empirical evidence that they exist.

I'd be really worried if I was the cleric and a bowl of petunias appeared, along with the whale...
