In addition to campaign transcripts, I've seen some general Realms stories on this board (as opposed to the website in general), and I was thinking of submitting some of my own, especially given the observed depth of criticism. However, I've also found a thread or two which implied fanfiction was discouraged.
So what qualifies as "fanfic" exactly, as opposed to just a Realms story? It would seem those centering around Drizzt, Arilyn, etc. are right out. But what about when canon characters are referred to in passing but don't actually appear/play a major role? Or a story dealing with how a novel event (i.e. Lolth's Silence) affected things elsewhere? Something spinning off events and characters mentioned in a sourcebook? How about the various gods who have an established "character" in published fiction (say Finder, Cyric, Corellon and his dysfunctional family)?
Just thought it would be nice to be sure of this before I make a complete fool of myself. Thanks.

Wait. Which threads? Let me see the links.
As for 'fanfic'... I believe the traditional definition is any story that involves canon characters that are not your own (even if it's just a fleeting reference).
Personally, though, I consider a story to be a fanfic if it involves canon locations, settings or an overall universe that are not your own. If that's the case, pretty much every FR story on this board would qualify as fanfiction.
I don't know for certain how the moderators define it. |

Well met
Providing thy tale is Realms specific and is of good quality, I will gladly review it with a view to feature the tale in our Campaign Logs section

The first one that comes to mind is http://www.candlekeep.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2028. Then again, that was more than two years ago.

Yeah, I always thought of it as the latter myself, but from what I read it seemed that either it carries a different meaning around here, or the site rules have changed since then. |

Hmmm, so fiction can be added to the Campaign Log, even if it weren't even used in a campaign?
Cool.
I've been strongly contemplating eventually starting a Realms work of my own. Of course, I'll need to finish the WotSQ series, but after I do--and I still have the desire to do so--I may go ahead and begin it.
Cool. |

Indeed, Aquanova. I intend to split that particular section of the site into actual Campaign Logs and Tales, as it's gotten quite large and currently contains a mix of the two. |
