           	| I just deleted two "private messages" (from October and November) that consisted of a fictitious Ivory Coast hieress asking me for money. Has this happened to anybody else? My password for this sight is the same as for some other sights, would that be a factor? I am personally incompetent with computers (hence my handle), so I don't know if this is something that can happen with any forum, or if its something that needs to be brought to the attention of Candlekeep's operators. | |

Believe it or not, people do fall for phishing attempts like that... The way spammers operate, they can send thousands of messages at once for mere pennies. Even if only one person in a thousand is foolish enough to take the phishing attempt at face value, it can still turn into thousands of dollars of profit for the bad guy. A year or two ago, when the Nigerian schemes first started hitting the news, I saw some 50-ish woman who'd been arrested for embezzling money from her company to pay for the supposed money transfer....

The emails that appear to be from legitimate sources, like banks or PayPal, are the ones that really nail people. I've gotten several of those, and if you're not paying close attention, it's easy to be fooled.

It's not a security breach. Some spammer had a bot hit the site for email addresses, most likely, and decided to give it a go. I've gotten several of those PMs myself. There's no danger, so long as you don't respond.

                      | lowtech, Wooly's on the mark.
All I can say at this point, is that we are attempting to find the source of these disturbances. If you receive anything more through PMs that you are unsure about, send them my way and I'll take them under consideration.

                      | Well met
Aye, as my fellow moderators stated, pay no heed to this, lowtech. There are numerous attempted registrations occuring on a regular basis but they're being dealth with accordingly. Further measures are also being taken and will be in place soon.

 Apologies for the inconvenience.
