I realized today that there isn't a aiming rule for range weapons.

Anyone have some house rules that they find to be balancing?

Well there are some rules for ranged attacks, cover (Low Obstacles , Soft Cover and Total Cover) as well as range increments modifiers and reloading times. So indeed it would be good to know what you are looking dor beyound these rules.

Well. . . I think that's because it's always considered that your aiming. I'm assuming that you're talking about aiming for a couple of rounds or something like that. I don't know of any rules for that, I'd play it by ear as a DM (ie. if there was a wind mondifier and you spend two rounds compensating for the wind I might reduce the wind penalty)

Hmm, was thinking about this. Perhaps also looking for a facing rule? Time required to sight on a target could be wanted as well.

ShadeofDis has it right. I was thinking of a character taking time to aim carefully at a target. Firing 5 shots within a round, can't be as well aimed as they could be if taken time.

That would tend to lead to a called shot rule, after all 5 shots the first one has a much better chance to hit then the 5th shot because of the -5 to hit for progresive shots in a round.

most cases have been covered in the core rules (multipule shots, range increment)and taking aim has been covered in Total Warrior with the Initiate of the bow PRC, but movement (the archer or the target) has not been covered as far as I know

That is not the weirdest thing that happened to me

Sniper-like aiming would be interesting, not as a PrC-feature or feat but as a general rule, since I can't see a reason for a ranger to take a PrC in archer when he already has the archery style.

As for implementing target-movement, windspeed, distance moved (in addition to the target moving at all, since it is easier to follow a 5-foot-step target than aiming at someone sprinting four times his movement), sure, it would be more realistic, BUT this would slow down gameplay considerably since every bloody time sombody shoots at anyone moving through a battlefield. I played GURPS once where the GM and one of the players took 10 minutes calculating on shot using the available rules... sorry if gaming bogs down to too much math I don't want any of it.

I wouldn't want to get wrapped up in problems caused by firing on the run, as that can't be done without a feat anyway.

I was looking for a general rule, something outside of a feat or PrC.

I found a suggestion out on the net, but the bonuses it confirms are to powerful. They were giving a +3 to hit after a full round action of aiming. Then +3 damage if within 30 ft.

Mace,

I agree completely, if rolling slows down playing they you gotta cut down on the rolling :)

Anyhow, that said, I don't think there should be any sort of "aiming" modifier unless it's to specifically compensate for something, like the wind. The reason I say this is that aiming doesn't take long when you are proficient with a weapon, I've seen people who are good with a bow aim in a split second, it doesn't take long and it usually doesn't help to aim longer. I might allow a "take a round to compensate for wind" type situation, reduce the wind penalty by half or something like that, but I wouldn't really support a "take a round to aim get +2 to hit".

But that's just my 2 cents :)

BTW, I'm not familiar with the Total Warrior (did you mean "Complete Warrior"? if so I have the book kickin about, just haven't looked at it too hard) so I can't comment on the rules from that book.

It might be doable, the shooting at moving targets thingy, if you assign Dodge modifiers to movement (when shot at):
e.g.:
1 foot move (free action) no modifier
Regular move action +1 Dodge modifier to AC
Double move action +2 Dodge modifier
Triple move +3 AC
Quadruple move +4 AC

Or variants of this.

Shooting while moving could be solved the same way. You could apply a similar solution to that, only that a Double move would lead to a -2 on the attack roll.
