Last Friday I was GM'ing my Silver Marches group and along with all my players, got caught up in telling a tale (told by a Herald no less!)about an ancient dragon-slayer who's treasure filled tomb had been lost in the mists of time.

Riveted on my words, my players gawked in awe as I built on the ancient history of the lands. With oooh's and aawww's they encouraged my flights of fancy as I built an ever greater story of epic destiny, betrayal and redemption. When the tale (and evening) ended, I received congratulations from one and all on a terrific adventure and promises from everyone for starting even earlier next week!

So now I find myself with a party totally psyched on a story that I have no idea where it came from or where its going.

Normally I can pull myself out of such holes without too much trouble, but now I find my work schedule far too packed, and with only 5 more days until the next game I have to get something going.

So with that in mind ... does anyone have a few recommendations along the following lines

-famous dragon-slayers from the North or famous northern dragons who were slain but their horde never recovered?

-finding a way to pit yuan-ti and dragons against one another in an ancient battle that took place in the Silver Marches

- a giant sized muzzle that will stop me from doing this in the future?

Help on any suggestions (particularly the 3rd) would be greatly appreciated.

-horde of the dragons: after the death of the dragonslayers (how is not imporatant) the horde has been recoered by another dragon that knew where either the slayers had their HQ, lair or stronghold of some kind or where the hordes of the killed dragons were (many dragons usually know where the homes of many other dragons are), the treasure has already a new owner ;)

-yuan-ti and dragons: a family of goodly dragons didn't like the thought of having a yuan-ti colonie underneath their lair in the underdark and decided to rid the world of them and asked other goodly dragons to help them

-giant sized muzzle: sorry man, there you have to be creative yourself

That is not the weirdest thing that happened to me

you could set it up so that the dragon wasnt actually killed or not all of its eggs were destroyed. if the dragon reared itself somehow you could make it weaker than it should be effectively lowering the difficulty for your players to kill it themselves. or you could say the dragon wasnt actually killed and the rumors and legends were concocted by the dragon itself to make adventures less willing to go looking for its hide.
Trying to bring yuan-ti into the picture, there are tons of yuan-ti groups all around that region if you look in SK. maybe the yuan-ti can use cavern well bc it is designed anthropometrically for serpent-like creatures. Maybe the yuan-ti have some reptile lore they want to extract from the dragon's offspring or that remained behind in the treasure hoard.

It might be cool to do an adventure where you race against time to recover the most treasure or find the right hidden vaults and grottos before the yuan-ti.

if you want something more specific you need to tell us more about this story you told your players.

The Yuan-ti connection might be an interesting way to use the Spawn of Tiamat creatures that have been popping up in various D&D sourcebooks and the D&D miniatures line lately. As detailed in Serpent Kingdoms, the Yuan-ti have a prediliction toward experimental body augmentation using parts and pieces from different creatures (especially snakes/reptiles). I suppose you could make a Yuan-ti cult that is fascinated by dragons and wants to make humanoid/dragon hybrids (this could also result in the various 1/2 dragons). Any true dragon, good or evil, would want to destroy this Yuan-ti cult because of the outrage of perverting the dragon form in this way. This would definitely provide a means to pit Yuan-ti vs. dragons and might provide some other interesting subplots.

Who needs a muzzle? Maybe it's better to be too creative than not creative enough.

"Instead of asking why we sleep, it might make sense to ask why we wake. Perchance we live to dream. From that perspective, the sea of troubles we navigate in the workaday world might be the price we pay for admission to another night in the world of dreams."

I agree. many of my campaigns have started with just an outline of where I want things to go, but have turned into entirely different stories in the end. more is better, the players do not have to bite on every hook you throw at them.

Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for them.

And thanks for all the idea's!

Here's a little readers digest re-cap of where I left the party ...

When last we met...
The players had uncovered an ancient temple in the Nether Mtns that had been dedicated to a long forgotten god of dragons. The actual draco-deity was not discovered during the adventure.

While clearing out the lost temple from the taint of twisted druid, they found a glowing blue orb that hummed softly and had an aura of very strong Positive Energy. They went to Jalanthar to report their findings but no one was able to identify the orb or its powers.

Traveling north through the Moon Pass the party met with a Herald who had been searching for them. She told them that the Orb had been hidden away in the temple where all attempts to scry for its location would be blocked. She told them that the orb was able to return life to any dragon-egg that had not been able to hatch at the appropriate time. In my FR, dragon-stones are a rare magical stone that can contain a variety of mystical abilities. These dragon-stones are petrified dragon eggs, that did not hatch at the end of their natural period of gestation.

The herald told them that with the blue orb, anyone could hatch these dragon-stones and bring about a resurgence of the draco population. Something the Herald's did not want to see.

The party offered the orb to the Herald for safe keeping (which she accepted)but stated their desire to follow and protect her. Not wanting them to get tied up with the Heralds I quickly offered up another hook.

Hinting at a long hidden history of warfare between the draco and serpent Progenitors, she told them that the return of the Orb will most certainly bring both of their modern day descendants to the area. The area will need to be protected, and what better way than with the tools of an ancient dragon-slayer who helped to keep this land free from draconic control in ages past.

So that's the tale, and what I need to flesh out by next Friday.
