Someone has told me that at some point there was published a massive 2E Wall map. It was apparently similar in style the maps in the Forgotten Realms Atlas done by Karen Wynn Fonstad. Does anyone know of this map? The more specific the information the better. If it does exist, I'd like to seek out a copy.

While we are (almost) on the subject. I've been trying to decide whether to buy the Waterdeep Trail map, but is it of any use if one owns both the 1st and 2ed. maps in addition to the Fonstad Atlas? |

I got it framed by a professional
My Mum's an artist (does amazing seascapes, wowzers!), so that's not unusual, and I get a few of my own works printed up huge and framed.
only problem with my LOTR poster map frame is, it's SO damn heavy. gorgeous frame but construction is extremely heavy, so had to use 2 "double" hooks to hold it up.
good framer will use multicore wire, not string.
just as well we don't get any earthquakes here or it may fall on my head one day! :p
Important note:
DO NOT mount your poster or indeed any important piece of art where DIRECT sunlight will hit it.
Not only will it reflect off the glass/perspex, the sunlight will fade the artwork out, bad mojo!
hm, a metallic map like that of Faerun would be awesome! often called "Dufex" (the metallic style) |

Funny thing. Just last week, while I was on vacation (or staycation) I took out my two trail maps to see if I could put them together to put on the wall. From my test, if I do put the,up eventually, they will be better off separate. The scale is right, but some landmarks and landscape is off. Where south-east of Faerun should connect with South-west of Kara-Tur, one is ocean water, the other is blank land - and while some landmarks overlap in the important parts, there are some continuity errors there as well. But yes, the Waterdeep Trail Map is a map of all of Faerun.
On a first side note, I bought two nice Poster Frames with Lexan/Plastic protectors from Walmart and have put up the 3E Map and the 4E map respectively on my wall. VERY nice.
On another side note, I hope to eventually mauybe have the City System map of Waterdeep framed profesionnaly and mounted on my wall (that big a map all connected and single framed would be a few hundred $ though, but man that would be sweet). Then maybe all the other maps as well....one can dream! |

ah gotcha! :) that was on the cover of Secret of the Silverblades or inside it, wasn't it?

one of the things I really regretted parting with when I had to get rid of a lot of my collection was FR4 The Magister :(

Regarding the Trail Maps... I have the Kara-Tur Trail Map, but not the Waterdeep Trail Map; can anyone tell me if they are at the same scale, and if so, do they connect? (That is, does the Waterdeep Trail Map encompass all of Faerun?)
My current desktop wallpaper is the 3E FRCS map in hi-res from the URL linked to above by Wooly; it's very nice cartographically, but with every passing day I prefer the 1E/2E geography, mostly for the scale.
On the subject of Elmore art, I think my fave FR cover of his is still the cover of FR5 The Savage Frontier. I'd post a link, but I can't find a good one.  |

I would love to have enough walls to support my extra maps from City System and the 2E FRCS. I've got two or three sets of each of those, and a whole bunch more.
I do have an extra map from FR1 Waterdeep & The North on my wall, though. And one of these days I need to get that big Elmore print (the cover of FR9 The Bloodstone Lands) framed. |

I must admit that I prefer the shrunken version in Volos guide to Waterdeep, the one in City system takes up half the floor and is actually to big to be useful. |

Odd story:
here in Scotland, there's a great gameshop called "The Dragon & George" in Glasgow, odd little place RPG, wargame, plastic models
run by the most eccentric but nice fan of RPGs/games you could ever meet, real odd but fun/nice guy
it's round back of the Tron theatre in Parnie street so not far from Arglye street train station if any of you are ever there :)
And Static Games (larger, more modern) is right nearby, too.
Anyway, the Dragon & George used to have the most AMAZING collection of old game items still brand new not sold, I picked up the Kara-Tur and Waterdeep Trail maps there maybe 10? years ago.
And no, I am not parting with them! 
he also had things like the Grenadier titan scale Frost Giant, you know the one that's about 12 inches high? damn wish I had bought that, sigh
gave my own one I had painted to son of my mum's pal, and always wanted to do another.
Also had the Forgotten Realms CD Atlas, kept meaning to get it as £30 was a LOT of money back then, sigh..and then when I went to get it...gone! 
oh and the original city system for Waterdeep, damn I remember buying that and thinking, Holy ****! this is SOME set of maps!!! hehe ;)
be awesome to have them covering a wall. |

Speculatively, I would assume all 4e Campaign Guides will have pull-out maps. We've seen them in the FR tome, and now in the Eberron Campaign Guide as well. So I suspect the Dark Sun Campaign Guide, when it's released next year, will also feature its own pull-out map of Athas.

-- In similarly-related D&D map news, I finally received my copies of the Eberron Campaign Guide and Eberron Player's Guide. I was actually quite impressed with the cartographic elements, and the complete maps for the world. Good stuff!

I have the Atlas, and it's excellent. But it does not have a wall map.

Ah... the Trail Maps. I know that at one point I owned both. And I had them both up against a wall (I had a pretty big wall then). And then I moved. Wall not so big. I put the maps... somewhere. I am certain I did not sell them, but for the life of me I cannot remember what I did with them. They might be in any of four locations spread across two countries. Damn silly of me  . |

Folks, I just went thru and removed some links. It wasn't something I wanted to do, but it was something I was obligated to do. bladeinAmn's link appeared to be a scan someone posted on the internet; I'm seriously doubting they had legal authorization to be sharing that. Hellkeepa's link also led to a website that hosted a lot of stuff I'm doubting WotC would be happy about -- they tend to prefer that no one hosts their files other than themselves. To keep our own butts covered, I had to remove those links.
In the future, I should like to ask that folks posting links to stuff like that make sure that the host has the legal right to share the material. Doing that keeps this site safe.
Now, all that aside... I do know of a large map of the Realms that can be legally shared, as WotC is the one doing so. I'm afraid it's 3E and not 2E, as was originally requested, but it's still a nice-sized map. Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting Map Gallery |

Unfortunately that map doesn't lend itself to printing, at all. Not really for reading on a monitor either, due to the (unfortunate) low DPI it has been scanned with. Most of the writing is just unrecognisable squiggles, and it will be even worse when printed.
The best map I've found of Toril, though it's from 3rd ed, is the one I've linked to below. Works wery well on A3, even if some of the smaller writing becomes too small to read. Not sure about A2, but should be survivable with a very good printer and paper. Something in between should be the optimal size, methinks.
However, nothing beats the original prints when it comes to quality. So unless you're really strapped for cash, or they're otherwise unavailable for you, I recommend buying them instead.

This is beautiful and contains a lot of detail. Is this more detailed than the Trail Maps?
This looks like what my friend was talking about. I say this because this looks like a composite (you can see the join lines in places) of the maps that appear on several pages in the Forgotten Realms Atlas. In the Atlas, each section of the map has the number/letter grid, whereas this one has eliminated the smaller grids and placed them along the outside edges.
I think you'd have to go to a specialty printer to have this one printed, though. I wonder if someone did up this composite for themselves or if this was published at some point by TSR?

I've seen them on eBay for much more reasonable prices, though not often. I had to get the Waterdeep Trail Map from there, myself.
Luckily, the maps survived the fire... But I would like to get extra copies of them, eventually, so I can put them on a wall. Admittedly, I've got enough extra FR maps to cover many walls (particularly with the City System maps!), but still... |

You can try dragontrove.com also, as I've seen them appear on that site's online catalogue from time to time. And though they are pricey, I'd definitely recommend these pieces. Not only are they still decorating the walls of my home library after nearly twenty years, but they're still fun to stare at for long periods of time, even today. |
