Disclaimer: Please, no arguing over the alignment system and all. If you must gripe about it, do so elsewhere.

With that out of the way...

So I was curious how one could explain such a class and alignment would fit in the Realms. Some ideas I had.

Race
Most likely would be Human or Dwarf (likely Shield Dwarf or Gold Dwarf), possibly Halfling (I'd wager you'd mostly see such a combo amongst the Strongheart Halflings) or Gnome (most likely Rock Gnome).

Background
Possible character backgrounds might include the following
- Royal agent
- Town/city locksmith
- Assassin-like character sent by the church of a deity of LG, NG or LN alignment
- Indiana Jones-esque character intent on liberating treasures for the sake of all civilization

Religion
If possible, I'd potentially see the following deities having a LG Rogue worshipping them:
- Lathander
- Moradin (if a Dwarf)
- Arvoreen, Cyrrollalee or Yondalla (if a Halfling)
- Baravar Cloakshadow or Garl Glittergold (if a Gnome)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Any other ideas?

Heh. There's your LN professional assassin.
quote:
A thumb pressed against two fingers, and the lean figure of Dr Cruces, head tutor, looming over
the startled boys. 'We do not murder,' he said. It was a soft voice; the doctor never raised his
voice, but he had a way of giving it the pitch and spin that could make it be heard through a
hurricane. 'We do not execute. We do not massacre. We never, you may be very certain, we never
torture. We have no truck with crimes of passion or hatred or pointless gain. We do not do it for
a delight in inhumation, or to feed some secret inner need, or for petty advantage or for some
cause or belief; I tell you, gentlemen, that all these reasons are in the highest degree suspect.
Look into the face of a man who will kill you for a belief and your nostrils will snuff up the
scent of abomination. Hear a speech declaring a holy war and, I assure you, your ears should catch
the click of evil's scales and the dragging of its monstrous tail over the purity of the language.
'No, we do it for the money.
'And, because we above all must know the value of a human life, we do it for the a great deal of money.
'There can be few cleaner motives, so shorn of all pretence.
'Nil mortifi, sine lucre. Remember. No killing without payment.'
He paused for a moment.
'And always give a reciept,' he added.

Rogues/Thieves of any edition had no alignment restrictions. To go further, when I discuss assassin n, I did not discuss 1E character class nor 3.x Prestige Class. I say when you knowingly target and individual or a community for pre-meditated death, that is assassination. Is it evil? That is a Session Zero question

For LG assassin-type rogues, perhaps Slayer of Domiel. My endorsement of Book of Exalted Deeds, however, is less than wholehearted.

Would you consider multiclassing with clerics and paladins to make shadowbane stalkers/inquisitors? Or do you prefer sticking strictly to rogue?

The former is plausible for any player or DM who wants such. The latter is an option but not strictly necessary in this case.

In any case, I can easily picture LG rogues spying on behalf of governments, guilds and even temples with minimized risk of double-crossing.

Another likely scenario. Rather folds into my idea of a "royal agent" or agent/assassin-type character of a church with similar alignment.

A LG Rogue could be Batman-esqe, assisting a town or city guard in bringing justice to folks who have bent laws or are causing chaos

1E DMG offers the Scout (Thief subclass/variant) which can be any alignment.

I don't see any problem with a Lawful Good Rogue. A Lawful Good THIEF is another thing...

A LG Rogue can do all sorts of Lawful and Good in the Realms; including stealing (from Orcs and such) as part of warfare.

Especially among Dwarves and Halflings, they would probably be protectors of their community instead of leaches on the work of others.

Like a white-hat hacker, a LG Rogue could be a security specialist, thief-proofing vaults, palaces, and homes.

A LG Rogue could also be a double-agent or informant who infiltrates thieves' guilds and other criminal organizations for the sake of bringing them down, like Donnie Brasco.
