Are there any strong female liches in Faerun? I don't recall having seen any mention of one in the FRCS, nor in any of my 2e stuff.

There's some baelnorn in Myth Drannor, and I'd imagine many other elven ruins have baelnorn, as well.

Until 3e Undead didn't have to be evil. There were neutral and good skeletons in 2e. Jander Sunstar is a neutral elven vampire, etc. So no Undead didn't have to be evil. And why become undead? Well basically you can live longer then average, or as Wooly said you can protect your holdings, etc.

Baelnorn become undead to become guardians. Archliches can become undead for a variety of reasons, including remaining as a guardian over their family.

And I believe that Ed was the creator of both archliches (good-aligned liches) and baelnorn (elven liches, also good).

Actually in FR they don't have to be evil. FR has always had good or neutral aligned lichs as well. :)

Melfius, I got a whole list here: http://faculty.ncwc.edu/toconnor/428/428lect11.htm

While typing that entry, I just knew someone would come up with a list!

While gruesome, Lorena does not fit the evil stereo-type. She falls under the heading 'battered woman'. But, yes, I still shudder to think of it.

Also, I think while this woman I am about to mention isn't a serial killer, but men will cringe and cower when hearing her name: Lorena Bobbit. Lol.

I myself don't really care about whether it's a female or a male lich. After all, do any of us have the time to worry about its gender when the lich is throwing fireballs and casting disinegrate on you? Lol.
Melfius Posted - 20 Dec 2004 : 03:30:52
While she is not evil, the Lasy Alathene Moonstar (mentioned earlier in this thread as the proprietress of the Blushing Mermaid) is an arch-lich. She once served as mentor to a PC of mine.

To stray slightly from the worlds of Fantasy RPG: Psychologically speaking, a female is less apt to become evil than a male. For example, how many female serial killers can you name as opposed to male?

Unfortunatley, in this still mildly sexist society, females are raised with a strong bend towards nurturing. Being able to carry and birth a new life also has a profound effect on thinking. PLEASE don't interpret this as me being sexist. This is just what I was taught in psychology classes!

Alot of deviant, 'evil' behaviour can be found to have its root in testosterone. Testosterone has that nasty side-effect of causing anger and violent tendancies. And we males, unfortunately, have a super-abundance of it!

Drifting back towards fantasy/sci-fi, when a lady goes evil, she DOES suffer from the 'glass ceiling', since most other evil folk are male, she's got to be REALLY evil to succeed. Attrition rates here are high, meaning they get killed off by other evil men (and sometimes women) who can't handle the competition, or just can't stand the thought of being bested by a woman.

But when an evil lady succeeds, you get some really nasty villians who can scare the bejeezus out of a PC! Try it and see if I'm not right!
Neriandal Freit Posted - 20 Dec 2004 : 02:21:35
Now you can certainly be sexist could you?! Of course there are Female Liches! Given 89% of Liches are evil, you have your 11% of good, which by all these posts (if Real FR Liches, or made up) seem to be Neutrals or Goods, and not so many Evils like males.

Alparon Posted - 19 Dec 2004 : 20:48:37

Here's another uppity elf. :)

Braerindra, Watchnorn of Castle Cormanthyr, 21st wizard, Female Moon Elf Baelnorn, LN, Guards Castle Cormanthyr in Cormanthyr, Cormanthyr: Empire of the Elves.

How could we forget The Srinshee? Yeah Yeah I know she's not a lich any longer. :) Also the mother of the Seven Sisters thanks to the old Mystra but I know she's not alive any more either. :)

Yes, but what makes her uppity....that she's an elf, a gold elf, or a Durothil?

Three times, yes.

You mean like this? (rough notes, all off top of head stuff)

Fhuara the Undying/Fhuara Huntersfriend/Fhuara the Huntraitor
(CN h(lich)f Wizard 18/Arcane Devotee of Azuth 4/Archmage 2)
Lives in a three-story tower with first floor having a long-ago-rotted stables and servants' rooms.

She's sitting in the top tower room, her hands folded over a head-sized hunk of emerald green crystal. Gold flickers in her open eyes and in the depths of the crystal. Dust and cobwebs have settled over Fhuara and the gem. Any attempts to touch her or the gem reveal a magical field that makes them immaterial to magics or physical attacks. No psionic attempts have been made to awaken her.

Fhaura became undead to continue to protect the hamlet of Jhuril's Meet (in which she built her tower in 1287 DR; undead status in 1312) from the depradations of her former husband, a priest of Malar who saw it as a holy quest to hunt the hunters that settled here. Rumors state that she left her husband after only 2 years of unhappy marriage and had settled down with (depending on whose rumors you'd heard) a female or male apprentice whose name is lost.

Fhuara single-handedly destroyed a temple/monastery for Malar worshipers long hidden among the Nether Mountains. As she left no survivors, only those who survived the Slaughter of Jhuril's Meet tell the tale, and such rumors have not made it to the ears of Malar's church; luckily, her former husband was such a political pain in the behind within his own religion that no one cared to investigate when this high priest and his personal followers disappeared.

Fhuara hasn't noticed that the hamlet of Jhuril's Meet is long gone; her tower is the lone structure left from the hamlet save for the charred skeletal remnants of stone and metal from the smithy (on the stream about 300 feet west of the tower).

Jhuril's Mill was destroyed by an orc onslaught about 40 years back; it was a tiny logging/hunting encampment and Jhuril was a blacksmith who set up a water wheel to help pump air through his forge (and also to help heat adjacent homes).

The tower is about 2300 feet up above sea level well into the Nether Mountains, western slopes; the few survivors of the onslaught resettled down in what would become the Silver Marches' hunting hamlet (name escapes me at moment).

That help add a new figure for some campaigns?

By the by, I think you can make this work by changing refs to Nether Mountains to either Mount Sar or Mount Helimbrar for those who only do NW Faerun campaigns.

Steven
Who thinks there ought to be a lot more info on the mountains just north of Waterdeep....and what exactly are they and MOunt Waterdeep part of--what range?

Hey now, what are you doing, steering this scroll back on-topic? Don't you know better than to do that?

Well met

Aye, and about time I feared we would be heading into another elven debate...of which I simply could not bear

That's right! We don't need to hear more from those uppity elves!

Now, before that feared staff comes into play... Any other female liches out there that we know of?

Well for one thing, there are no average elves. Don't you know that all elves are superior?

Well -- think of multi-classing. Assuming that such madness is possible in game terms, how would you like to play a character who's a level 1 druid/level 1 bard/level 1 cleric/level 1 rogue/level 1 wizard/level 1 fighter/level 1 monk?
