I'm quite sure this question has come up before, but I can't see to find the answer. It certainly doesn't appear in official errata.

Anyway, there appears to be a discrepancy in the Player's Handbook. From the description of the list of bard weapon and armor proficiencies:

"A bard is proficient with all simple weapons, plus the longsword, rapier, sap, short sword, shortbow, and whip. Bards are proficient with light armor and shields (except tower shields)."

From the description of Armor Proficiency (Medium):

"Fighters, barbarians, paladins, clerics, druids, and bards automatically have Armor Proficiency (medium) as a bonus feat. They need not select it."

Clearly both cannot be right. I know the CRPG NWN2 went with bards not having proficiency with medium armor, but does anyone know if this indeed correct?

Hmm. Sian and Tyr read in Complete Arcane page 75 - The feat Battel caster!
Sian Posted - 21 Feb 2007 : 17:31:22
why not the middleway (noone is wrong) ... they can wear both Light and medium armor without problems ... but they can only cast spells while in light ...

ie. they have the Armor proficiency for Medium armors ... but doesn't know how to cast spells while in it ...

Well you'd need the Proficiency and Battlecaster for that armour type.

But If you really want medium amour you can always take the Battel caster feat

Excellent, thanks .

Found it, or at least best answer I can get.

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ask/20061213a

quote:
Q: Dear Sage,
Do bards have the Armor Proficiency (Medium) feat? The class description and feat description don’t agree.
--Fraser

A: No, they don’t. The class description takes precedence over the feat description.

I recall a discussion with SRK about this issue on his board where when 3.5 came out that because of the change of Bard spell list, that light was removed from spell failure.

That is the best I can offer right now, though searching EotC site for a quick, non ziped answer.
