I was thinking of purchasing Dragon: Monster Ecologies and Dungeons & Dragons: The Dragon Compendium. I was never a Dragon subscriber, at least I wasn't until WoTC ended their licence . I signed up during the last year.

Can any of the scribes here recommend them? Has anyone purchased them yet?

Oh and has WoTC began publishing their own Dungeon and Dragon magazines yet? Probably filled with 4e stuff anyway, if they have.

And if the PCs DO win their ways through all the liches to Larloch, “he” will almost certainly be just another lich (loaded with explosive spells) set up as a decoy, with dozens of hidden liches waiting to pounce on any surviving PCs who ‘celebrate’ after they take Larloch down. As the REAL Larloch watches (magical scrying) from afar. Myself, as DM, I’d be wondering: “Such a glorious game, so many opportunities laid out before your PCs to devote your time to, and THIS fixation is the best you can come up with? Are you SURE you’re adventurers?” -Ed Greenwood

Well, publishing depends on how you define it. They have been posting articles that are suppose to be grouped together into issues, and then after enough articles have been released, they compile all of the articles together in a PDF. To be honest, I've kind of liked the Demonomicon of Graz'zt article and bits and pieces of the Infernal Hierarchy articles, but its mainly been ads for 4th edition that spend a lot of time talking about how great 4th edition will be without giving many details.

As far as the products go, I absolutely love the Dragon Compendium. Lots of really interesting ideas in it for races, classes, equipment, and monsters, as well as some "blast from the past" articles reprinted.

The monster ecologies I enjoyed, and I picked it up even though I had most of the articles in Dragon originally, but if you don't have most of the issues, one of the things I liked about the more recent ecology articles is that they usually had a few "advanced" versions of the monster in the article that was worthwhile if you want to use a tougher version of the critter.

I would recommend both of them.

Monster Ecologies, the only one of those I have, is really excellent. The advanced monsters are nice, but I especially like the fluff in the articles. Really inspires me to use some of those monsters!

Thanks guys. I believe you have convinced me.

Heh . . . if you read through this:

I definitely got some inspiration from the spellweaver ecology when I was writing it.

I haven't gotten the Ecologies book yet, though, I'm really wanting a copy of it. It's on my wish list. I've flipped through it, and they've done some good work.

I have had the Dragon Compendium, though, for a while, and I use it a lot for my games. There's some good stuff in there. Some of the classes, I'm not too keen over, but there are some that are really interesting to run with. I also think that it's got a nice selection of feats. I'm hoping that Paizo gets permission to do some more compendiums.
