Given the opportunity and enough power, who do you think deserve to ascend to godhood? And what deity would they be based on their personalities? Of what alignment would they be?

I am not sure yet what “opportunity” would this be. Perhaps another ToT, where Cyric and Shar manage to concoct a SW-powered spell that enervates all gods, except Ao, and which backfires and affects them as well...

I think The Simbul will do well to be a new Goddess of Magic. She's been a Chosen for almost as long as El and has proved her strength countless times by defending Aglarond from Thay, rescuing El from Hell, single-handedly eliminated almost all members of a cabal of Red Wizards, etc... Her favor for good men and attraction to some villainous men (like Lauzoril) ensures that she'd be fair in dealing with both evil and good magic-users. She'll be, of course, of NG alignment.

Szass Tam will be the new Morninglord. Why not God of Death? In “Unholy,” he revealed that he never likes himself being an undead, and if he'd ascend to godhood through Fastrin's spell, he'd annihilate the imperfect world and make a new, perfect one, and that includes himself. (That's what's ironic about him: using undeath to bring about new, untarnished life.). He'll be of LG.

Rivalen Tanthul will be the new God of Loss. We've learned in the TW saga that he served Shar not just for the survival of the city of Shade, but because he himself revered “loss.” I think he'll be better to be of LE; though NE sounds right for him, too.

I think Halaster ought to be the other God of Magic, one always vying with the Simbul for divine power through the acquisition of worshippers and their active use of magic, with the loser inheriting some measure of the other’s madness.

The loser naturally wants to retain their sanity, so they frenetically cause inspiration through divine visions sent to their worshippers, which furthers the cause of one deity at the expense of the other, and so the cycle continues.

Something like that.

I’d want to go for the whole tri-partite, three-fold-deity thing, but I’m not sure who ought to be at the center of this duo. Elminster just doesn’t seem right.

[edit: …and just like that, Can I Play With Madness by Iron Maiden popped into my head and is now playing earworm style. Thanks left brain!]

I'd rather have Halaster as the replacement of Azuth. (Assuming he wasn't really eaten by Asmodeus; that it was just his avatar the archdevil devoured.)

I would like to see Artemis become the new Lord of Murder.

Not a savage and feral god of murder like Bhaal was sometimes portrayed...but more cunning and refined perhaps.

Another person I would like to see become a God is the opposite side of this nefarious duo: Jarlaxle. He would be a great Drow God.

However, out of all of the choices I could make I would have to say I would like to see a clean new face suddenly spring to being in the Forgotten Realms. The Forgotten Realms needs, in my opinion, to have something challenge its Pantheons.

Some new deity (or deities) that are established in a small area and then burst forth to not challenge nations, but to challenge the established faiths.

The Old Grey Box and AD&D for me!

I don't see the need for new deities. There are already a lot of minor deities that are hardly mentioned in the books who could use some “stage time,” perhaps ascend to greater deities to challenge the current ones, much like Lloth's case.

Good idea, for the center use Khelben, Sammaster or Karsus, use three ancient schools of magic.

Perhaps you missed my point: I'm saying that I don't like the scattering of Gods...I would like some sort of unity among them...and there is nothing more "uniting" than being threatened by a common foe.

Check your post. You merged my words with your reply.

Anyway, as to the threat that could challenge the gods and in the process force them to unify, that's a rather interesting idea. But as I said, I don't see why it has to be a new deity posing this threat. It can be an existing minor god who grows tired being one of the weak and somehow stumbles upon a great source of power that can boost his strength and threaten the very existence of both minor and greater deities.

Very true...it could be an existing God. Gargauth comes to mind...but I think in 4e he is gone? Can't recall.

LOL...I did merge our posts...sorry for that. Been in a bit of pain lately...and as the day goes along I have to take more meds.

Wow. I can't believe I said this. Now that it actually happened, [am I a seer after all?], I just can't stand it. Either I didn't ponder on it then hard enough, or saw the future and simply stated it.

Dennis, I thought you didn't care for the gods? Lol anyway, hmm...tough question. Zaknafein as another drow deity! Haha, no, I'm serious, and Elkantar too, since he was Qilue's lover, and she was a Chosen. Simbol as a goddess isn't such a bad idea either.

I still don't.

I only want to see those favorite characters of mine ascend after I get tired of seeing them a lot. [Because godhood means less novel time, and more hiding in their pathetic personal heavens/hells]. Apparently, The Simbul should not be on that list. [How selfish of me, I know.]

Because they live in a dreary, boring place.

Seriously, though, they just don't hold that much appeal to me. If and when they exist, they should only be hinted at or appear/speak in the briefest of moments. In short, mysterious; not outright meddling.

"Dreary and boring" probably depends on the god. You don't like the idea of a god's realm?

That was a joke. Though with a tinge of truth. To me, their realms are more like illusory concoctions than actual places. This is just a minor reason, compared to the second one I previously mentioned.

I think we've seen by now that their realms are more than illusory concoctions and are actual planes. I think a lot of people feel the same way you do about the meddling part, though (I'm an exception ^^;).

Hrm. Considering the only character, off the top of my head, that I'd like to see this happen to has already had it happen(Obould), this is tough.

Eh, hell, just for fun; Athrogate for the new dwarf god.

You know, the first time I encountered the word "Athrogate" I thought it was a name of a place. [Though at least it sounds better than Erikson's cutlery names for people.]

Ok so many of his names are actually quite stupid and sound like he just came up with them on the fly but some are really good.
How can you not love a main character named Whiskeyjack. Or an elite assassin named Dancer.

Always liked Athrogate's name. Rolls off the tongue.

One name I could never stand was Thibbledorf Pwent. Don't mind him as a character, but as soon as I saw his name I knew RAS was just screwing with us.

I don't mind Whiskeyjack. But Lull, List, Cuttle, Truth, Nil, Mallet, Toes, and Story? Seriously? [I was expecting he'd use Piss and S~#t.]

Umm I would like to defend one of my favourites authors but the fact is that I totally agree with you. Those names are awful. The one I hated the most was Tarr. I mean really whats next, Cement?

Since we're on the topic of names, does anyone remember the dwarf from Hunter's Blades trilogy named Runabout Kickastone? That made me laugh. Or Cordio Muffinhead.
