I'm dipping a toe in gaming after having been away for the better part of 15 years and casting about for inspiration and advice... I used to play with a group of friends who I've maintained ties with, and thanks to the magic of the internet and some yet-to-be determined technology, I'm going to try to get us all back "together" again to see if we can still have some fun.

Hoping to use some sort of Skype/Videoconferencing situation plus a tool like OpenRPG or something to get us all back to the "table," since in-person is not an option with our having spread out to California, Florida, Boston, Colorado, and even Russia. Anyone who's got ideas on these practical considerations please let me know - I'm an IT guy, so my level of knowledge is pretty high, but I assume there's good stuff out there without needing to re-invent the wheel...

Also need to get caught up in my Realms Lore - just what happened with this SpellPlauge thingy?

At any rate, I'm going to post over on the novels subforum as well, but if anyone has ideas about what basic materials I need to get myself caught up from the late 1300's / post Time of Troubles era until now, aside from the obvious source and rule books, let me know.

My plan is to do a medium-length campaign with our old (Mid 20s level) characters, having reconfigured them for V4 and come up with a suitable explanation as to what they've been doing for a hundred years or so (and in some cases why they're still alive!,) relating it back to the recent history of Faerun, and then giving them the retirement (or spectacular demise) they deserve after all these years.

Obviously I'll have to bend the canon a bit to accommodate the high profile position of our little band in our specific games' history, but I think the 100-year jump will be very beneficial in that regard, actually.

Anyhow, any reading recommendations or advice would be awesome - there's a lot of stuff out there, and I don't really know where to begin AT ALL... I've seriously been out of the game since 1996 or so. But I read fast, and I'm excited about the prospect of having some good games to look forward to, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to Candlekeep!

Feel free to ask any questions you may have... A lot of us have been Realms fans for years, and we know a thing or three about the setting. Plus, we've got some of the authors and creators here!

As for the rest of us, we are friendly, mostly harmless, and occasionally strange... Enjoy your stay!
