Hello,
I search the process used by Vargo Kent to become an half-dragon.

Vargo used apparently an alchemical process, but he hasn't the brew potion feat.

With craft (alchemy) skill ?

Thanks for your future answer.

I suspect Cult of the Dragons used polymorph as part of rite of passage.

"Small beings can have small wisdom," the dragon said. "And small wise beings are better than small fools. Listen: Wisdom is caring for afterwards."
"Caring for afterwards ...? Ker repeated this without understanding.
"After action, afterwards," the dragon said. "Choose the afterwards first, then the action. Fools choose action first."

I remember there was a guide where a human half-dragon got transformation through alchemy or some kind of ritual. Was it 'Champions of Ruins'?

Actually, it's the Dragonborn of Bahamut, from Races of the Dragon. Not the same thing as the "true" half-dragons. Those were children of dragons and demihumans (originally only metallics). The 3rd ed MM updated them to include other dragon types, and RotD brought in Dragonborn and a couple of other variants. I did mine with the original 2nd ed stat rules, though they've been converted for 3.5.

No, not that. I remember it was some kind of dragon loving freak of Cult of the Dragon. He turned from human to half-dragon.

From Dragons of Faerūn p.58 :
quote:
In between hours of monotonous work as apprentice, Reveilaein found time to translate the writings on the tablet - an ancient artifact sacred to the draconic demigod Kalzareinad, the nefarious dragon god of dark secrets. The writings detailed a process which a half-dragon could undergo a transformation into dracolich know as the Kaemundar. Fascinated by the idea of becoming immortal but aware of his human limitations, the young apprentice sought a way to transform himself into a half-dragon.
Reveilaen was aware that his mater Vargo had once been a normal human but had discovered an alchemical process that turned him into a half-black dragon. The young mage concocted a scheme to steal the formula. ... ripping the page out of the mage's notes that contained the formula.

And here it is, depending on what you are.

Player: Ask DM permission first. Then make a craft: Alchemy check with a DC: Super high. It requires rare materials that you must gather first. Your DM will know it.

DM: Choose rather or not you want your players to have this. If so, make it so they need to gather rare materials first, then past a high DC craft: Alchemy check. Apply the template and make it so it takes them four more levels before they gain another level. (To pay off the ECL).

In other words, the formula that Vargo used? It's all fluff, no crunch. There is no hard rules on how it's made, just total fluff, much like how many wizards used spells and potions to make them live longer. That's why it's no where in any 3rd or 3.5 edition books.

I wouldn't. I would mandate the blood of a true dragon. But that's just me.

I'm inclined to agree. Including lycanthropic blood brings with it, all kinds of alternate possibilities.

The Cult of the Dragon variant was probably the Dragon disciple from the Complete Prestige Classes Compendium book.

Nope. Vargo is just a straight level 16 evoker. He doesn't even have any craft: Alchemy, though he does have brew potion. It just states in his bio that he made it, transformed, then joined the cult of the dragon.

That sounds kind of backward. How does a simple potion turn one into a half-dragon? There's nothing in that PrC that says one can't use a potion as part of the entry for the class, but it seems like he should have joined the Cult FIRST, not the other way around.

Vargo was always obsess with dragons. When he was seven years old, his family was forced by a black dragon to take care of a dragon egg. When it was hatched, Vargo spent his life taking care of it. (Dragon is now an adult and Vargo's cohort). He figured he could go far in the cult since he already belived in the doctorn for a long time.

There is a spell for becoming a half-fiend somewhere, ( I don't recall which book, or if it was 3.0/3.5). Shouldn't be too much of a stretch that he had a varient to become half-dragon, and just /permency/ it.

Then why not just use change shape and perm and be done with it? Seems like it would make more sense than a non-existent alchemy concoction when he doesn't have the skill to make it. Although potions could be argued to be alchemy creations. I'd say just call it whatever you ant, or make up your own lore for it.

I don't know why he didn't do that. All I know is what was put in Champions of Ruin, and that it was he made a potion that made him a half-dragon.

Not the first time a FR character has made a spell, or done something that isn't in any rule book on how they possibly could do it.

There are no rules on the process in any of the books, nor should there be really. Vargo and his apprentice are unique NPC people who have abilities not found in standard things. If a PC wants to be Half-dragon they should take the template or the PrC to get there like normal people.
