Tomorrow night I'm trying something different in my home Realms game. I'm kinda excited and kinda nervous about it, but I thought I'd share, and open the floor up to see what sort of "outside the norm" things my fellow scribes have done in their home games.

I've been running this game since last March, and we've had a ton of fun. A lot of the game's events I've posted about and asked advice for here at the Keep, and ya'll have been very helpful.

Tomorrow, we're setting aside the character sheets and dice and having a party. But not just any party.
End of last session, we wrapped up with setting up camp along the way from Secomber to Loudwater.
I decided, and the rest of my players agreed that it would be fun to do kind of a semi-LARP thing for one session instead of our usual dice rolling. So we're going to just RP a night camped by the road. No combat, just play boardgames and such in character.

I've got a small fire pit in my backyard, it's cleaned out and ready to serve as a campfire. I've dug through Aurora's Catalog and a few other tomes for some games to play. I've printed out the rules for Lanceboard, I've got a deck of three-dragon ante, and a few other "in-world" games to play.

I'm giving rewards to anyone that attempts to wear a costume representing their character, rewards for staying in character all night, and a few other odd categories.

My wife is planning on making the Roast Cockatrice recipe from Elminster's Forgotten Realms. Her character's background is as a cook, so that'll work out nicely. She already tried out the recipe on me this past Wednesday, and it tastes delicious.

Anyway, it's all looking to be fun. I'm hoping it helps people get into their character's head a little more, strengthen party bonds, and overall make the night fun and memorable.

What about anyone else? Any ideas, stories of things that really brought a party together, et cetera?

Sounds most excellent. I have nothing to contribute, but I'm wishing I was one of your players.

Thank you. If you're in the Upstate of SC, I could work you in. Just have you as a wandering solo adventurer that comes up on the camp.
I just realized I can't find my chess pieces. Lanceboard might become a few miniatures on the board I've made.

Sounds fun! If I loved closer I'd bring some mead!

Yup. Still a little chilly here in NE, but soon.

Mead sounds fun. I am kicking myself for not thinking of it. I've got some Fireball whiskey, but that part's a BYOB event. If someone does bring mead, they might be rewarded. I'm not saying I can't be bribed, but I'm not saying that I'm immune to nature's laws of cause and effect, either.

One of the guys is bringing some home made brownie cheesecake. May or may not be a official Realmsian trail food... but if you've ever had this guy's brownie cheesecake, you wouldn't say no to him bringing it. It contributes to immersion of a different kind.
It's shaping up to be a 3D event: Dungeons, Dragons, and Diabetes.
Oh, and I found my chess pieces.

Where'd you buy the cockatrice meat? I've looked all over town for cockatrice meat, and all I get are funny looks. Well, except for the time the cops were called...

My wife tells me that the bird was masquerading as a chicken. Seems some cockatrices can cast polymorph in this world.

And Wooly, if you were asking for cockatrice in the red light district, they may have misunderstood your meaning.

Cheesecake definitely does not qualify as trail-food, and I'd be careful about how much chocolate I'd mix with Fireballs, although hot cinnamon whiskey cheesecake does sound delicious.

I'd recommend the Fireball Whiskey alone. It goes very fast at bachelor parties. Good stuff.

Only does that in large quantities. For some reason I dare not investigate scientifically, a shot relaxes me enough that I don't get nervous.

Will you be cooking your mockatrice in a shield, as per the recipe?

Cheese + Cake absolutely qualifies as trail food. How else could a halfling adventurer survive?

I do wonder if your friend bakes real brownies into his desserts. Little buggers can be hard to catch unless you dangle an elf out as bait.

So that's how you get Girl Scout cookies out of season!
I'll have to ask. It wouldn't surprise me if he's at least seasoned a few into the mix.

Hah. Took me a minute to get it. Wrap a brownie in a tortilla with a little chapolte. Them slender bones are crunchably delicious

To keep ya'll up to date, the event was a blast. Most of the party played Three Dragon Ante. The human rogue lost horribly. The Moon Elf Wild Mage and the Kender played a game similar to Mancala, and that turned out about the way you'd expect a game with a Kender to turn out. There was a bit of underhanded sneaking and such. The Lanceboard game was won by the Dwarven Fighter, lost by yours truly filling in for the night as the caravan boss.
The cockatrice was good, though I may add a few more seasonings in the future for my own personal preferences. Most of the humor was very "you had to be there" or "you had to know the character" to really get it.
All in all, it was great. I'd recommend trying it if you ever get the chance.
Now I'm gonna go crash. 'Night all!
