I finished off Silver Shadows yesterday. The more S&S books I read the more saddened I become that Reclamation will most likely never see the light of day. Cunningham's books are just superb.
I have now started The Veiled Dragon. Most reviews that I've seen for it have not been great, but I want to give it a shot. |

They also had 2 (I think that means both) Elminster's Ecologies; I think I will probably grab them after I get paid (and if they are still there).
There was an Elminster's Ecologies boxed set, and two Appendices, both of which were two books. |

And the Appendices themselves are available as a free PDF downloads at WotC.

I'll try to find Volo's books...
Yesterday I finished The Pirate King, later I'll post my opinion at the relative topic.
I begun Stowaway... I still don't know what to say about it... I... I... I... I... I... I... (subliminar message for those who read it)
The Pirate King were my 50th FR novel... Let's rush to one hundred now... And this is my 100th post here at candlekeep, I love you all. LoL. |

Some of the Volo's Guides are freely available as PDFs from the link I provided above.
And they're all great supplements... As I've said before, it was Volo's Guide to Waterdeep that made me fall in love with the Realms. I have a copy of that and Volo's Guide to the North in my car, for those times my wife drags me someplace I don't want to go. |

I finished Jenna Helland's The Fanged Crown last week. Lots of great characters, and lots of great lore about the current political situation in Tethyr, with a real cliffhanger of an ending. The nested flashback structure was well-deployed, and I found plenty to be enthusiastic about in the book: the dwarven culture in Chult, the earthmote political prison in Tethyr, the deftly suggested richness of backgrounds for even minor characters--good stuff! Fans of Lee Miller's Roanoke: Solving the Mystery of the Lost Colony from a few years ago will probably have extra fun with this one.
Now I'm about halfway through Downshadow and have James P. Davis' The Restless Shore sitting here as well. I still need to read the second book in the Blades of Moonsea trilogy, too. I'm trying to read stuff as it comes out but I lent that to husband-and-wife players in my home campaign and they're taking their time with it! |
My Realms novel, Sandstorm, is now available for ordering. |

I think he's referring to the fact that the book is written in first person, which can sometimes get old and be a difficult read. |

I read that book, and I don't quite get what you're saying.
There are some pages that EVERY paragraph begun with "I"... Page 12 is one of those. And some paragraph with more than four "I"s.
I'm at the end of the book.. Page 230 I think.. It's an easy reading, with some good parts. It's not a Kemp, RAS or Cunningham book, but still is a good book. |

See, I didn't think the first-person perspective in that book was such a big deal. At least, it didn't bother me. |

| The book's being marketed as a YA--and first person POV is widely prevalent in YA. Many teen readers seem to like 1st and very tight 3rd-limited better than omniscient, unless you kind of disguise the omniscient by carefully dialing in and out of different characters instead of going all Olaf Stapledon. |

I agree. Considering it was written as a young adult novel I was not bothered by the first person perspective, and I don't think it diminished the quality of the read in any way. I agree that it was no Kemp or Cunningham, but considering it was for kids that's probably a good thing. |

Indeed!
'Tis my favourite area of the Realms. So much in fact, that I composed pretty much everything we know on the Border Kingdoms from published Realmslore [including from the novels and some of the BK tidbits I was missing {thanks again to Krash}] into a handy reference source with proper binding and a neato cover illustrated by my own hand.
I like to think it's as close to the concept of the original BK sourcebook that Ed once talked about.
...
Oh, and if you weren't already aware of it skychrome, Tom Costa wrote an article for the town of Oeble over at Wizards.com Books. 'Tis here.

Finished The Stowaway.. It's really a nice book, I know it was made for teenagers, but even so, I felt a bit strange with so many "I". But the final result for the book is good... It's the first FR novel that I read without an end, and I'm waiting anxiously for the next one.
Let's begin reading The Last Mythal Trilogy... |

Awesome Sage! Thank you very much! I always wanted to know more about Oeble, because there is nothing said about it in the BK information that I once read on the web. There is a lot of stuff on the Wizards page but it is some kind of science to find something there on one's own without using divination's magic or asking here at the forum.

I enjoyed The Veiled Dragon, myself... Then again, I think Troy Denning is the only FR author who falls into the "hit-or-miss" category. People, as individual readers, either love his stuff or hate it; I never hear anyone say "oh, this Denning book was not bad, but not great."
Not only that, but the reaction is the same to his books. Some people love the Return of the Archwizards, for example, while other people hate it. Again, there doesn't seem to be a middle ground. And this goes for just about all of his FR books. I myself have hated some of his books, and really enjoyed others... |

The Veiled Dragon is OK, probably the worst of the Denning novels I have read, but far from the worst FR novel. Its somewhere in the top fifty. Most Realms authors have their ups and downs. There are books by Ed and Elaine that I enjoy less than the Veiled Dragon.
In general I like Denning, but I must admit that I have not read those books people generally complain about, such as the one in the Lost Empire series and the Return of the Archwizards, as the plots didn't interest me.

Well, I've been putting off expressing my thoughts on The Veiled Dragon for about a week now because I really don't enjoy criticising books, but here goes. It wasn't good. Probably my least favorite Realms novel yet out of nearly 100. Without giving away too much, the pidgin English he used for the Shou was beyond annoying. He didn't use it for Dragonwall, so I'm not sure why he felt the need to use it here. More importantly, in The Parched Sea, Ruha was a minor magic user who knew some useful spells for use in the desert. Now, she's all of a sudden a powerful witch who we find out has single handedly killed 3 dragons between The Parched Sea and Veiled Dragon. The plot held very little interest for me as well.
As some of you have said, I find that I either really enjoy or really dread Denning's books. I enjoyed Waterdeep and TPS. Dragonwall and TVD were two of the worst.
I am now about 120 pages into Stormlight and am anxiously looking forward to a scene in which Storm is not naked. |
