Miniatures Handbook and Expanded Psionics Handbook are the only non-FR books I have purchased since summer 2003. If it doesn't have the FR logo on it, I use a lot of discrimination... and Miniatures passed the test (you simply cannot go without Mass Combat rules if you ever run a Cormyrean campaign, like I did...) |

What made it better for Mass Combat rules compared to other published tomes like the one from Malhavoc Press? |

I have no clue, especially as those don't likely require an armload of miniatures... |

I don't know anything about the Malhavoc Press system, so sorry if I sounded like I knew anything about the competitors, for I don't.
What I personally like about the WotC Mass Combat is that it works hand in hand with the the standard D&D game. It's a simplified ruleset, but it's D&D abilities, spells, etc. that are translated in a mass combat setting. It's a 3.5 product so the mass combat rules mesh in closely with those very rules (which I use). Furthermore, I do buy the D&D minis so it's an additional bonus for me, as each mini comes with its mass combat "stats" at the reverse of the card, so less job for me, the already overburdened DM (although I am aware that this is not an advantage to those who do not buy the D&D minis...)
I'll agree that this is not a perfect system though. You cannot simply take an NPC that you use in your games and translate it directly into a mass combat format... the process is at best an art, with a lot of guesses and judgement calls required by the DM (i.e. don't allow your players to "come up" with their own "mass combat stats") The setting is also unsuitable for high-level play: so if one side has an archmage lobbing widened fireballs on the troops, it's pretty much game over for the victimized side. If a DM would throw a high-level NPC into the fray during a WotC mass combat scenario, this would be the PC's cue to fly/burrow/climb/run to face this foe before he decimates hundreds of human commoners or man-at-arms present on the battlefield... |

Ah, understood. Thanks for the clarification and for sharing your happiness with the WOTC system. |

The stone golem looks great although beign a golem I can't understand why it is not given a faction of 'any' rather than LG.
I was surpised to see Lareth the Beuatiful. He is classic NPC but I never really considered him a legend (ala Mordenkainen, Bigby, Tenser, etc) from Greyhawk. He was only a minor villain in Village of Hommlet as I recall, but I guess someone on the design team had a soft spot for him. |
Just My Thoughts Chyron :)

Someone from ENWorld just sent me a share the love discount for some Giants of Legend minis. Even with that discount which cuts the price down quite a bit, I still think I'm going to pass on purchasing anything where I don't know exactly what I'm getting. |

There are also numerous GRR and Mongoose tomes which detail variant Astral Constructs. There's simply too many books to mentioned all together, but most of these publishers earlier workers contain at least one or two variants.

I wouldn't go that far. As long as there are metacreationists in your warband, you're bound to have astral constructs at some point...

So, you'll have little use for the 'Warforged' minis then?

Yes, I recall.
I'm hoping that I'll have a nice little collection though. Since Eberron will be my first time DMing, I'm intending on running an miniature based adventure as well, set somewhere in Khorvaire.
