I've a question for the Sages regarding mythals:

How would I explain mythals to someone who isn't familar with FR? I've been trying and failing miserably. At least I can't seem to get the concept across to them. Hopefully you can help me.

Can they be made by anyone with the desire and know-how?
Where does the power behind them come from?
Can they be destroyed or only decayed over time?
Is there a way around their influence?

..in the beginning there was darkness.

Mythals are basically magical fields that encompass an area in a sphere (i.e. they are 3-dimensional).

There are several types of mythal. The 'classic' mythal is created by High Magic (in 3E - Epic spellcasting). Some High Magic mythals are Myth Rhynn and Myth Dyrallis both in the lands of Calimshan/Tethyr and created by the elves of Keltormir.

Secondly, there are 'wizardly' mythals - created by the 10th-level spell "Weave Mythal". The mythal around Myth Drannor was this type of mythal. Such mythals are dealt with in the 'Cormanthyr' accessory but basically the 10-th level spell "Weave Mythal" can only be cast with the express consent of the goddess Mystra.

So the answer to your first question is essentially "No". You either have to be an elven High Mage (see the Epic Level Handbook) or have the blessings of Mystra before you can cast the wizardly version. Either way, it's unlikely to be a spell you are going to find on a scroll in a tattered sack in some orc lair.

The power behind all mythals comes from all around us. In other words, the air, trees, living creatures all contribute to a mythal's health and longevity. A pristine, nature-focused environment where everything is 'healthy' is the perfect power source for a mythal.

Mythals do decay over time - if their power source (i.e. the environment they are in) becomes befouled by pollution, inhabitants or nasty magic. As to whether they can be 'dispelled' in the classic sense, I'm not sure there is an answer to that question. One assumes that they can be 'undone' but this would be a long, laborious process, akin to 'unweaving' the original mythal I would say. Some mighty artifacts (such as the Gatekeeper's Crystal) can destroy mythals.

Yes, there is a way around a mythal's influence - if you know how. It requires you to be 'attuned' to the mythal, be a ble to tap into the mythal and manipulate the mythal to get around any of its effects or prohibitions. Again, this would not be an easy or swift process and would have to be discovered by very dangerous trial and error or by learning it from someone who knows how.

Hope the above has helped you somewhat with your questions.

Acolyte Nyx,

I would read this quick article and then give the URL to them, since it is a very fascinating read:

http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Mythal

Best regards,
