So today I was looking thru a pdf of the manual to the first Baldur's Gate game -- specifically, the Volo's Guide to Baldur's Gate section of it.

One particular line caught my attention. In the discussion of power groups, under the Harpers entry, I found this sentence (boldfacing is mine):

quote:
Their aim is to keep the dangers to civilization at bay, including goblin raids, dragon flights, and the insidious control of other groups such as the Zhentarim, Red Wizards, the Commer, or the Cult of the Dragon.

So, who are the Commer? Am I having a brainfart, or was this just something made up for that game?

Seach appears to indicate a term of disruptive New Comers. One "comming" to build power base.

I can not find a deffinition of the term and only see it in context of a title not desired to earn or be called.

Edit: Only other use appears to indicate Commonor however that does not fit in context of your quote from David "Zeb" Cook well at all. Nor does a newbie which still appears most common useage on the web.

I give up, have not found much more info of this evil group of people. Prehaps Ed knows.

"Small beings can have small wisdom," the dragon said. "And small wise beings are better than small fools. Listen: Wisdom is caring for afterwards."
"Caring for afterwards ...? Ker repeated this without understanding.
"After action, afterwards," the dragon said. "Choose the afterwards first, then the action. Fools choose action first."

Ask Ed, since I believe, he wrote that intro. :) They don't ring a bell either.

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

If I had to guess, I'd say it was a group the BIOWARE guys planned to use in their games and never followed up on it. At least I've never heard of the Commer....but then I've forgotten an awful amount of Realmslore over the years. I don't have the wild-enough hair or beard like Ed to hold it all in, trapped like flies in a web....

Have you ever noticed that just about all the FR authors have at least a Goatee?

So that's why there's no author-photos of Elaine in her books

And no need to tell me the real reason, I've read it elsewhere.

There is a rumour going around that I have found god. I think is unlikely because I have enough difficulty finding my keys, and there is empirical evidence that they exist.

I'll have to remember that, when I decide to try to get something published.

Blame Elminster and his excessive use of the "hairy" cantrip (1e ref).

Guilty.

And the more time passes, the thicker and longer it becomes. . .

Must be absorption of Realmslore.

Or natural growth, something like that.

Cheers

P.S. I assure you all, it's a total coincidence that we all grow facial hair (excepting the womenfolk, unless they're part dwarf). Nowhere in any of my contracts does it stipulate the "necessary cultivation of a pair of moustaches, goatee and/or full beard to match Realmsian flavor," particularly not on page 8, paragraph 4, line two.

Resurrecting this thread for a last hurrah...

Yes, the Commer were, so far as I know, created by the computer game designers, to be “set up” as a background foe for future games. Despite Volo’s name appearing on that manual, I didn’t write it (though a lot of it was, of course, drawn from both my published lore and unpublished notes) and in fact have never seen it, despite the Realms agreement.
We must assume that the Commer are still “out there,” lurking, perhaps close than one might thUUURK
